Birth certificate question
Just a random question that occured to me today.
How many of you first/birth parents kept the child's birth certificate. Our daughter's birthmom kept hers and I wondered how common that is. What made me think about it was that I was filling out her book and I realized that I don't know how long she was or how much she weighed. What other items did you keep and why? |

I never knew I was able to keep the OBC. The Agency took care of everything.
I kept my hospital bracelets. The Agency gave me snapshots of DD during her 1st six weeks up until Placement Day. I have kept the note DD's mom wrote me when DD was about 6 months old. I also have a copy of my paperwork from the adoption. That is all I have...I wish I had more.

I have a copy of the B.C. that the hospital gave me, however it was not a "legal" B.C., more like a piece of paper with stats. When I had my other 4 children I had to send away for their OBC, I have never been offered it at the hospital.

We kept it. I just came across it the other day when I was cleaning out the writing desk. His legal one's in the safe deposit box, but this is the one from the hospital.

Here you don't just get a Birth Certificate - you have to send away from them.
M's birthmom and I shared his hospital tags. He had one on his leg and one on his arm - so we each have one. The nurses made up some extra stuff so we could each have one. Like the bassinette label. They also did one up with my name as the mom - but I prefer the real one. |

I ordered his OBC before the adoption was finalized.

I have a copy of the amended with her name and my last name on it. It was amended from the OBC since she left the hospital as Baby Girl H****** and the one that I have was filed from the agency before the adoption became finalized. But then behind that copy I have a list of the errors on it.

I was not offered one - but her parents have her OBC with all of the info on it - the agency gave that to them (not sure how I feel about that tho...)

I never thought I had the OBC, but several months ago (while looking for my own BC for my passport application) I came acress a letter from DD's a mom from when DD was 3 weeks old, requesting her OBC to submit to her state for the adoption. So I must have had it, but I really don't remember coming home with ANYTHING not even my hospital bracelet (I was naive enough to think that I could just move on and forget, silly moi!)
She didn't return it, so as far as I am aware, they may have her OBC, which is not a bad thing at all since her DD's birth state is not an open record state, so hopefully they were able to keep it for her if she wants it one day.

Browneyes - any document that I submitted for M's finalization - the courts kept. This may be true in your case too. If she had to submit it, she may not have gotten it back.

I figured as much, but I was kinda hoping maybe they got it back I 'd have rather her parents have kept it for her than me keeping it, KWIM?

I have the BC papers from the hospital. To get the legal OBC I would have to send in a check to the Health Dept. in the county/state he was born in.

I was not given any paperwork at all. I did write down her vital statics and carried them in my wallet for about 12 years- until I lost my purse.
I don't think that I would want her BC as it hurt to look at it. It called her baby girl R. How cold. Is said father unknown- and I had given the ageny his name and info. They said it was easier that way. I guess it kept them from having to find him to sign the papers. I wish he would have had to. Didn't they put your child's vitals on the new BC? Maybe your agency has the information. |
