"Mother"--venting about terms
I would like to preface this stating that I am an adoptee (not sure if this information is relevant, but that way you all know lol). I know this topic has been brought up in the past and I'm sorry if I'm beating a dead horse lol
So, I was on another website (one that has many people who just spew thoughts without regard to other people's feelings) and ran across a question someone had about a new term they found in a post somewhere else. The asker saw the term "life mother" that referred to birthmothers and asked people what they thought about the term. Not surprisingly (for the website I was looking at), there was a huge blowup over it. Most of what I saw were birthmothers up in arms saying how on their paperwork all it said was "mother" and that is what they demanded to be referred to as. I obviously do not doubt that the paperwork listed them as "mother" because that is what they are. However, on the internet, we sometimes need to make a distinction (especially if we are adoptees) and need to preface "mother" with something else. For example, if an adoptee says "I talked to my mother today" on the internet, how would we know which mother they are talking about? Sometimes I think people get a little too wrapped up in titles. I think if it's obvious that the title is used in malice then feeling hurt, angry, etc. is more than understandable. However, if it's obvious that the term is not being used in malice, then why is it such a big deal? Sorry for the vent fest and I'm sorry if I may have offended anyone in the course of this (I really tried not to because I have nothing but respect for all of you all). Sometimes the other website I frequent just strikes some serious chords in me (which makes me question why I go there in the first place lol) thanks for letting me vent =) <3 always hpfreak080 19 year old adoptee |
