Age Question
We are also looking at Colombia and see the age limit for under 2 years old is 38. I see the wait time can be 3 plus years. My question is, my husband just turned 35, and I will turn 35 in February. At what point are they looking at your age? Application? Dossier? At time of referral? How likely are we to make the age cutoff? Thanks for any info!

It is too late for me to do the math.. but we got approved for a child up to 35 months old, and my husband will be over 38 when we get the child... So I guess you are fine right now ;-)

I think they go by the age of the mother at the time of approval. (I guess they assume the mother will be the primary caregiver.) When we were approved, my husband was 37, but since I was over 40, we were approved for a 3-5 year old instead of an infant.

So if I'm understanding correctly, it's age at the time you are approved by the authorities in Colombia? The time before the wait for your child begins?

It is your age on the day you are approved by Colombia. The day you are approved they assign you to an age range. For example -- like Rebecca said they were assigned to 3-5 years. Others are assigned to 0-36 months. ICBF is widening their age ranges. This will apply to new applications --
0-35 months 3-5 years 6-7 years You can get a child that is any age in that category. The hope is that this will speed up the process for slower age categories while still maintaining the parental age range. Oh, and this applies to ICBF only Casas Privadas seem to have slightly more generous age categories. Last edited by Sumerce : 10-18-2009 at 02:24 PM. |
