Post Adoption Questions

I am preparing a week of Post-Adoption issues for the blog and was wondering if I could enlist the help of those that have completed their adoptions.

MEDICAL QUESTIONS:

1- At your child/ren's first post-adoption medical appt., did you doctor find anything unexpected? YES/NO

2- Did you child have any issues with parasites? Yes/ No Did you check even if they were symptom free? Yes/ No

3- Has your child experienced any eczema? Yes/No

4- Were you advised to reimmunize? Yes /No

WHAT I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN/DONE....

If there is anything that you would have done differently or could have changed about what you did to prepare your child to come home or after they were home what would they be. What would you advise others to do?

May I quote you? Use your name or Anonymous?

Please feel free to answer here or PM me.

Thanks

Here are my answers:

1.no- everything we were told in Colombia was accurate; there were no surprises.

2. no and no

3. I don't think so, but I am going to ask about it at Drew's 3 year appointment b/c he does have some dry skin/bumps on his upper arms.

4. no

We had a pretty easy transition and no major issues with Drew. He was healthy and the few little things that were noted in his Colombian medical file were confirmed by doctors here. Most of the things that I wish we had done differently have to do with preparing our older son for the changes.

You are free to quote me, but I don't think I've said anything quote worthy!

Medical Questions:

1. No

2. No and Yes

3. No but they get very dry skin in the winter. We use lots of lotion and chap stick.

4. No. They had blood work to see if they had the immunizations and they did. No need to catch them up on any.

The only thing that I might of looked at more prior to the children coming home would of been the school district and the street we live on. I grew up with tons of kids to play with and we do not live on a street with many children. Also our school district is not the best, so we are looking at moving soon.

Feel free to quote me if you wish.

---------I wish I would have read more about Post Adoption Depression and MY attachment to her. I wish I would had made a packet full of photocopied articles and a reading list for family and friends, regrading attachment and need to establish ourselves first had MOM and DAD. My inlaws had a real hard time with this. My mom did too although she tried to play it cool.

Answers:

1. Yes- The Dr. found a vaginal skin tag that needed to be treated with Primarin hormonal cream, and also referred her to an opthamologist to rule out a lazy eye (it turned out to be fine).

2. No parasites (we did check just in case).

3. No eczema.

4. Dr. drew blood titers to make sure the immunizations had "taken" and they had, so we did not have to revaccinate. However, she had not received the Prevnar vaccine in Colombia, so she had to get caught up on that one.

Our daughter was still an infant when we brought her home, so there wasn't much we had to do to "prepare" her for life in the U.S. She had a very smooth transition. We did keep the blanket that her foster mother gave us and continued to put it to bed with her once we got home so that she had at least one familiar object with her in her new bed.

You are welcome to quote me if you wish to.
