Advice needed: caregiver gift
We are leaving tomorrow for Colombia and know that our son is attached to his caregiver. Does anyone have ideas of some sort of gift we could give her? Thanks!

Is your son at an orphanage or in ICBF care?
If he is in ICBF care, you will not see his caregiver. Fostermothers do not typically ever get to have contact with the adoptive family. I left a letter for our foster mother, but a year later when a friend in Bogota actually met her, she had never been given the letter or the pictures we had sent her. It is a nice gesture, but I doubt she will ever receive anything you bring her. If you still want to bring her something -- any electrodomestic product in COlombia is super expensive so they are very popular gifts. In the past, we have brought -- CD players, DVD players, Electric Juicers, Electric Sandwich makers, Air popcorn poppers, blenders. Also Corelle dishes are a big hit -- but very heavy. Other requests we regularly get from our family is for clothes - this might be harder if you do not know her size. |

It is an orphanage, so I hope we do get to meet her. Thanks for the advice.

I met my daughter's foster mom when we first met my daughter. My case worker from Bogota was quite amazed that they allowed this (I did OK it). She said it "algo costeņo"
Anyway, I found out the day before that we had the option of allowing her to be there since she requested to be there. I went out a bought a nice purse for her. I had no idea what to get. I knew that she was really attached to my daughter and visa versa. Overall, I think its a good idea for this to happen. My daughter got to see her foster mom and I interact with one another and we also played with her together. I think it helped with her adjustment. |
