Hi all....I am waiting for an offering of a child from Medellin, Colombia and I am trying to figure out what kind of phone/plan/etc. I need to buy for the 3 weeks that I will be in Medellin and Bogota. Any suggestions? I have an IPhone and I know it should work there but AT&T will charge me $2/minute. Any other ideas? Thanks!

You could try to buy an unlocked phone and then get a SIM card when you get to Colombia for prepaid service. This will give you a local number in Colombia.

If you are looking for calling back to the states an internet based solution is probably best, ie SKYPE, Magic Jack, etc.

I ditto what Laura said. While we were in Bogota we went to "Comcel" and bought new sim cards for our phones to use for local calls, and we used Skype to call back to the States.

Thanks for the advice. I think I can get my iphone unlocked for the local calls. I'll need to figure out how to install/activate skype....Im not so techno savvy!

All you have to do is go to Skype official website – free download and free calls and internet calls and download the software for your PC. You will also need a webcam if you want to use video.

Thanks so much....do you happen to know if the web cam that is built into my computer will work with Skype? And I'm asuming in order to use video the person I'm calling also has to have Skype, right? Thanks!
