True.
It's just that it's not simply an "anti-christianity" book.
There's a lot more of it to that.
Chances are the movie will cut out all of that and make the story weak as a result.
It's more about the corrupt Christianity that frustrates me, that I dispise that has little to do with REAL Christianity.
It is an intense book (but I'm telling you. Fire-Us is even intenser, not to say that it isn't good, but it should be 12 and up I think) full of facinating themes, but you can't judge it by folks who have only read the first book or read about the first book or had other people read the rest of the series who approached it with the same sort of bias they accuse Philip Pullman of having.
Really it would be better if folks read things from different perspectives so as to understand it better. I disagree with OSC's conservative views, but they are a bit valuable balanced with more liberal views. (Which he hates, but is liberalism really that bad? Society needs different perspectives to balance it out, otherwise you end up with the sort of corruption this book touches on.)

I just want to state again, that this is purely MY opioion and what I feel is best for me and MY family. I am not trying to get anyone else over to my side nor am saying that my view is right for evereybody. This is my PERSONAL choice for ME and MY family, nobody else.

What I am saying is no one has a right to tell ANYONE - Christian or not.

You assume I mean no one should comment - when what I mean is everyone should have a right to chose what works for them and their family.

Yes, it's the Christian Forum - interesting how the "Isn't This the X Forum" always comes up when someone gets uncomfortable

What? I'm not uncomfortable?? I was confused as to your intent with the post. I mean I didn't say "YOU SHOULD NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE -ANYONE ANYWHERE"

I said the part that is wrong (i'm sorry I must have forgotten the all so important "IN MY OPINION" piece) is that it is aimed at children.

I for one do like to hear different sides of the coin on things, I always have. But I don't think children can quite "get" what we do...the intent of the movie / book is anti - christianity...that pretty much means that my kids will stay far away. I don't mean it as "you should keep your kids away or you are a sinner that will burn with the devil". I don't think it's wrong that the movie or book is out. I think it's wrong that it's aimed at children SPECIFICALLY with the intent of spreading his anti-christianity (based on what I've read).

ETA - Synethesia, I do agree!! I LOVE that we all have different views on things...I guess I kinda find it a little...hard, when it's aimed at kids. More so when the intent is anti-christianity but it's not publicized at such KWIM? I don't disagree with anyone reading the books period or the movie itself.

Just to let people know, my original intend of this thread was so people could go look up what they wanted to on this movie and the books. I know I only included one link, but I wanted people to not blindly go let their kids watch a movie they may later regret.

*sigh* I Ditto this fine print and agree with it.

Why do we have to even post this? Shouldn't it be understood?

ETA: Thank you Bajj for posting this!! Really!! I probably would not have known and sent it on to my friends / family who also had no clue and would have been VERY upset if they would have brought thier kids to it.

I guess all I am saying is, not all kids are Christian, so the fact that there is a book out there for Non-Christian Kids shouldn't be a big surprise...

It's just odd to me that people are making an accusation of 'intent' regarding the movie...

Honestly, I don't recall seeing Veggie Tales being marketed as Christian...but if I am remembering correctly, it was Christian in nature.

Uhhhh....i don't think anyone said that it's a surprise.

I think what we are saying is that be AWARE that it is anti-christianity. It's not an accusation. I'm fairly sure that they have said it really is the intent and what it is based on.

On my Veggie Tales tape it did say "God" and talk about "christian".

Of course I don't think I would be outraged if a member posted on the "Athiest" board not to rent a "veggie tales" tape because it is based on christian views. It's an athiest board...so of course they probably wouldn't want thier kids to watch the show because it disagrees with thier beliefs. Same thing here.

I doubt Philip Pullman thought, "Hey, I'll write a book and convert kids to atheism."
He probably just wanted to write a cool book with animals as people's souls that is entertaining and makes you think.
There's other books that are a lot more harmful. Those stupid baby books written by people who don't know a thing about babies come to mind.
Man, those books annoy me. I've actually read two of them and they are horrible. Folks who know nothing about the way babies' mind work not only telling people that it's Christian to be like that when it isn't, but making parenthood seem like a war between the parent a child. That's waaaaaaaaaaaaay worse than this series, though it should be read by older kids since it is intense.

I doubt that, it probably teaches good values. Being an atheist doesn't mean that you don't have good values... An atheist just doesn't believe in God. That's not a bad thing, but it's worse not to believe in some sort of spirituality though... some underlying thing that exist.

Okay folks.... I realize there's a difference of opinion but let's take a breather and post respectfully.

Thanks...
