Adopting

My husband and I have applied to adopt a child. We are very excited and also a little nervous. Would like to hear from people who have been through the process.

Are you adopting privately, through the state, an agency?

We adopted our son through the state and had a wonderful experience. He was 13 mo. when we got him and is now 3. His adoption was legally free (paretnal rights were terminated).

We have another little guy who we desperately hope and pray to adopt. He is 11mo. and was placed with us as foster at 5 mo.

Let us know if you have any specific questions.

We are going through a private agency. We just sent in the initial paperwork though. They said it can be a long wait to hear back. It is hard waiting. I am glad you had a good experience and wish you the best with your other one.

Thank you. Yes, I know the wait is difficult. This forum site has been wonderful in filling some of that time. I think it's nice to know you are not the only one in the position you are--even though I know some days you might feel like you are.

Take care,
Melissa

Why will it be a long wait? Do they not do much outreach? Can you do some of your own networking? Can they network with other agencies? As you can see I was not good at waiting. I was all over our agencies. I also looked at their placement rate before I signed up. Of course there are sometimes other considerations other that how many babies an agency places in a year or how long the wait is but for me those were real high on th priority list.
