So what does someone who has never knitted and has no supplies need to 'start'.

I think I might like it...but want to start small.

If anyone has any tips...

So, what I had was a good "how to knit" book - the one I bought was by Debbie Bliss, but there are lots out there. They will work you through projects from easy to hard, teaching you the basics as you go along.

The easiest thing I think is to do a basic scarf, all in garter stitch. You will learn how to cast on and off and how to do the basic knit stitch.

I would recommend you find a yarn store in your area - something locally owned and operated, but if you don't have that go to some place like Michael's (Walmart would be okay, but I can't guarantee the people who work there know how to knit) and tell them you are new to knitting and can they suggest a project and can they get you started?

Another good first project because it's small and oh so useful is a basic dishcloth.

If you start a knitters thread count me in. I can't knit to save my life. My 12 year old can knit, but I can't. Something wrong with that. LOL.

Brandy - I highly recommend picking up an elderly lady (probably find them at a senior citizen complex)....I'm not sure the going rate, but if you keep your eyes open I'm sure you can find a discounted senior.

My grandma taught me to knit - my other grandma taught me to crochet. I still have a handy dandy book with EVERYTHING in it that I keep in my knitting bag - just in case I get confused on terminology (I still think it's silly that English and American terms are sooo different!!!)

I would definitely start with a dishcloth! That way it's useful, small and it doesn't matter if it's not perfect - it's just a stinkin dishcloth!!

How's everyone's knitting coming along?

I've got a few projects on the go - a little hooded jacket for my neice that I just have to seam together (which I hate), a little pair of pants for the nugget (my first project done on double pointed needles) and then a simple dishcloth blankie for the nugget.

I'm a failure!

Well, I just haven't tried yet I've been so gosh darned busy. Truthfully, I probably won't get on any projects until I get back from my vacay since I'm super swamped until then

But then I'm all about it!! Gotta get started on those Cupcakes - I want to have some done for Christmas!! haha

I understandC - I totally understand. Well let me know when you are ready to start and I can help if needed. I can't wait to see the finished project. They are just way too cute.

Did you get an invite to Ravelry yet?

Well let's see....what do I have on the go....

1 - still working on that ridiculously detailed blankie (seriously , what was I thinking knitting an entire nursery rhyme???)

2 - working on a fall sweater for M

3 - a pink crochetted outfit (gotta love crochet, it's so much faster than knitting!)

and then for this fall/winter I have a hat/mitten/scarf set for M and another button-up sweater.

yeah.....I see carpol tunnel in my future! lol

Which pattern are you making for M? Another Sirdar one? That cat sweater was cute you did a few years back.

I went looking yarn the other week and found a cross stitch project that I fell in love with and I am working on that.

Right around the fourth of July I had this hankering to learn to knit so I picked up a book at JoAnn's and taught myself over the weekend.

My first 2 projects were hats for the VikingPirate. He'd wanted a "Jayne Hat" (as seen in the TV show Firefly) for awhile and I agreed that I'd make him one. Found a pattern online and everything.

The 1st one was done in an alternate color scheme because I was still practicing and needed to size up the pattern because his head is huge. I sized it up a bit too much and the hat is uber tall, but other than that it looks nice. The 2nd one was in the actual colors from the show and I sized it pretty close to right.

But now I'm stymied. I don't know what to make next. I fiddled with teaching myself socks for awhile but just didn't have my heart in it... And while I'm sure I could do an easy scarf, it seems silly when I'm moving to a place with an average temperature of 80 something.

Any suggestions?
