School shootings dictate new policies...

I was just curious to know what if any new policies or procedures have been put in place at your kids' school in response to the last week's tragedies.

I volunteer weekly at my kids' school. We've been attending the school for 5 years and as I have 4 kids in the school, the office knows me well.

Today I went to volunteer and the office staff greeted me "Hi, Mrs. XXX, how are you?" "I need to see some id".
Huh?

Our district has now decided that any person going into the classrooms of the school has to show id. Okay, that's fine...I get it in theory. But seriously...the office staff knows most if not all the parents, and they certainly know the volunteers as we have to sign in each time as well as complete ppwk before volunteering.

So what purpose does an id give? Does our district really believe that an intruder is going to stop by the school office to announce their arrival? "Hi, here's my id, and here's my gun"

To me, it's nothing short of butt coverage because it's not actually doing anything to add safety measures, imo.

But got me thinking....what is going on elsewhere in response to the events?

our school put into practice a lot of new policies after 9/11.

i'm on the school board and there is one last change we've been debating putting into effect. this recent news will probably spur us on.

how very, very sad.

I know after Columbine happened, our schools stepped up the security measures, but more against student vs. student crimes. More cameras, more locked doors, and new schools being built are not building lockers in the main halls etc.

I hope our district gets a bit better, and not just an implementation of "well, we tried"...

I hate to see "security measures" for the sake of instituting meaures rather than to actually prevent a problem. IDing parents you know seems to be a waste of time. Time that could be better spent.

I don't know what the answers are, but we've got to keep our schools safe for our children.
