Where are all of the gardeners?
Just wondering how many gardeners there are on this board. When/what will you plant this year?
We live in Pgh, so the last frost isn't until as late as mid-May. I was meant to be born in the south I think. Anyway, I'll probably put in some snap peas, radishes, and onion sets in April and take my chances. In May, I'll get some tomato and pepper plants, and plant some squash seeds. Maybe try some carrots this year. Flowers-I have every kind of rose bush imaginable around my house. We've been putting in some perennials here and there. I go with the cottage colors-the purples, pinks, and lavenders. dh built me an arbor, so I planted some clematis. I'll put some annuals in too-mostly impatiens and petunias. I really love the southern flowers-the bouganvillea (sp?), jasmine, etc. I'd love to plant something more exotic that could take a northern climate. Any ideas?

We live in an urban neighborhood so our space is limited but we do plant. Our kids (9 and 3) like to help. My wife takes care of the day lilies, tulips and roses. I haven't done vegetables yet but I plan on trying a few this year with the little space we have left - I'm thinking tomatoes and maybe green beans. I've had great luck with our strawberry plants and our blueberry and raspberry bushes have done well. Any other ideas for the city gardener with a small yard?

I've done cherry and plum tomatoes, as well as pepper plants, in containers on my porch. They don't take up room, and you can pick from them for a few weeks.
Have you grown any herbs? They don't take up much space at all. I have parsley, dill, oregano, and chives on my kitchen windowsill. Our daffodils and tulips are starting to poke through. They'll bloom right around Dennis' birthday!

We are getting ready to put out our cool season garden. Onions, cabbage, cauliflower etc... then it'll be on to tomatoes, lettuce, squash, zuchinni, radishes. I love to garden and work outside. We are going to give potatoes another try this year. Last year was our first year with them and we dug them too soon. They were good just really really tiny.
I'm an iris person when it comes to flowers. I'm working on having them in all colors all around the house. I've got quite a few patches of them this year that need to be separated and spread out. I'm so ready for the warmer weather! I love this time of year.

no gardener here. I kill living things planted in the earth, no matter how hard I try (other than weeds, which grow no matter what I do.) I knew my daughter would thrive because my cats and rabbits have thrived-otherwise I might have been a tad concerned, lol. Just finally killed off our pointsettias from xmas. Plan to plant some flowers around our house -fingers crossed they last til next winter...

Lisa...might I suggest fake flowers?
I mean..you killed a poinsetta and that's hard to do. Unless of course you don't water them. Sorry...I'm just really having a hard time picturing you with a watering can, big floppy hat and GASP! dirt in your fingernails. ![]() Hey...I bet if you look up your "mentor" Martha, she'll have good tips for planting fake flowers... ![]()

Thanks for the suggestion. We actually have dill and chive plants on our kitchen window sill, too. We're thinking maybe basil outside, as well as spearmint. Do you have any experience with these? I've heard basil proliferates rapidly and we don't want it to take over the strawberry plants. |

I kinda miss not having a garden. But then again, I lost my "green thumb" when I left my ex. I had more time then to play in the garden. Between work and housework, I dont have any energy and/or time to garden. However, I would love to spread a bag of grass seed over the backyard which is a pile of dirt, right now. Any suggestions on the best type of grass seed? (my ex and I put sod down in the front yard. (I dont know how many squares we used) But it was alot of hard work!
