Anyone else need to kick the soda habit??
I need help! On Monday I was goig to stop drinking soda. Then I left my water bottle in the car and used that as an excuse to stop at the soda machine.
So then there was Tuesday. And it was a long day at school so I used that as an excuse to stop at a fast food drive through for a soda on my way home. And then Wednesday came along. And I had a few soda's because I went to dinner with a friend and then out to a bar. I used that as my excuse for having soda rather than water. Then today I used the excuse that I was out last night and had to get up early and I'm tired so I had to have a soda to stay awake. Now I'll probably use the excuse that I've already had a soda today so that I can have another one this afternoon in class. See, I'm doomed! I need help!!! HELP!!! So, would anyone like to help me quit drinking soda or does anyone else need to quit drinking soda? I'm thinking the best way to do it would be to start a contest on who can go the longest before breaking down and having a drink of the sugary ambrosia of soda... The reward for winning will be public recognition on the forums for being strong against the hardest odds, battling a sugar (or caffine) habit .

Well Michelle I feel your pain! When I managed a video store back in the day I had to close up shop around midnight and I would always get me A LARGE fountain Mt. Dew to help me through the night. I tried to give up the soft drinks and then would get terrible migraine caffiene withdrawal headaches so I went back to drinking them. Well I am happy to say I haveb een on caffeine free soft drinks for years now, so I kicked the caffiene but haven't kicked the soft drink addiction!
Also in addition to this thread I will ask that you post your real addictive soft drinks. I know mine used to be Mt. Dew but now it is Diet Caffeine Free Diet Coke.

Michelle- you must be my twin! I am so addicted to soda and have tried many times, unsuccessfully of course, to give them up. I drink Dr. Pepper like it's going out of style! It's actually quite atrocious how much I drink. And when I decide to quit I come up with the exact same lame excuses you do! I'm right there with you, so any thoughts on how we can kick this habit?

No suggestions on how to quit, just relief to hear that there are others out there like me! I too, have tried to quit and was surprised (why, I don't know) by the withdrawals - it was awful! My dh says that if anyone takes my blood it would be pure Pepsi running through my veins!

Since I wrote this thread... I knew that if I had this second soda today, I'd have to publicly admit to it, soooo... I managed to (YAY!) skip my second soda today. I walked past a machine, even thought, well... I already had one..., and kept walking!!!
I dont have any really great idea's on kicking the habit, but hopefully having to publicly admit to my addiction to the sugary ambrosia will help me beat my addiction. I'm so glad I'm not the only one, too, who has issues with soda. People think I'm nuts when I talk about the terrible headaches I'd get when I didnt have caffine (which I actually have managed to get under slight control and now mix my soda's half mt dew and half seirra mist) but when I dont have caffine, I dont get the headaches nearly as often anymore. So, what other excuses have you guys used (or anyone who hasnt posted here yet) to have more soda??

I too, bleed Pepsi!
I actually gave up pop (in Western NY it's pop, not soda) for over a year. I only drank water and milk. I really hate to admit it, but I felt better. The thing was, I was the CSD (carbonated soft drink) buyer for a supermarker chain. So, when a new supplier came in with a new formula for private label pop, I had to sample. I haven't been able to kick it since. That was about 4 years ago. I've tried, but it's been so bad, that if someone opens a Pepsi while sitting at the table with me, it SMELLS good to me. I only had a 24 ounce bottle today. That's really good for me. I usually have at least 2 bottles at work. |

I gave up soda! Caffiene triggers my migraine headaches, and I know that Diet Soda is even worse for you than regular soda, so I finally quit. I admit, sometimes I miss Diet Pepsi & Wild Cherry Pepsi!
Now, if I am craving carbonated soda-type drinks, I drink black cherry spritzer. I buy it in the natural foods section at my grocery store. I can't remember the brand name right now unfortunately. It's better for you than soda, less sugar, more natural flavoring. I absolutely have to have caffiene, so I have one cup of coffee in the morning and that's IT. Okay, so sometimes I have two. I've been drinking decaf lately, which sucks, but I feel like I need to limit the caffiene, as hard as it is. Why is everything that tastes yummy so bad for you? ![]()

I am not trying to kick it entirely, because that way madness lies. But I am down to one soda and one coffee per day.

LMAO.. they say "everything is bad". If its not one thing, its another that they come up with. If it dont cause cancer, then you could get addicted to it..
As to soda/Pop.. whichever ya'll like... why kick the habit? Caffine, isnt that bad, a few aint gonna hurt. If you give it up cold turkey, you could be doing more harm than good. Your body gets used to things/habits. And it, (caffine) could cause head aches if you give it up. Look at BC powders, those who know what I am talking about, also, midol. Alot of things have caffine. Even choclate cake, which, BTW, has MORE caffine than a can of coke. Coke has more caffine than pepsi. Were doomed. Drink up, its alot safer if you must drink and drive to drink pepsi or coke than to drink beer. Right? "Drink pepsi and arrive alive". I LOVE MY CAFFINE! I have another habit I wished I could kick. But I am tired of trying to quit. Smoking. Like my grandma used to say.. "let it take me to the grave." If its not smoking.. Im sure some scientist, somewhere, will come up with some other thing that I am addicted to, that could kill me. <sigh> if its not one thing, its another. And your ****ed if you do, and ****ed if ya dont. know what I mean? |

Yeah, I know what you mean. But (for me anyway) I need to kick the habit completely before I can get to moderation. I'd drink Mt Dew by the case if I allowed myself to have it in the house! Literally!
So, tomorrow... no soda (or pop ) for me. And this time, I'm going to try to not make excuses for myself. I'm bringing my daughter out to lunch tomorrow (we do that on her half day's from school) and I'm not going to let the excuse of being at a restaurant kill my resolve .

LOL.. Which Mountain Dew do you like the best?
My mom quit drinking soda/pop, because it put weight on her hips. But on a occasion, she will "sneak" <giggle> a sip of pepsi. Good luck to ya! Oh.. there is Caffine free sodas. My daughter, youngest one, couldnt have/ still cant have caffine. She has to have caffine free/diet. I guess anything tastes better than water. LOL |

I've cut down a TON on the caffine and have been doing okay with Sprite and Seirra Mist, but.... well... I love the plain old boring Mt Dew
. Part of it is the caffine, but more of it is the damage it does to teeth and the empty calories that I can probably attribute at least one inch of the addition to my hips to . I dont think soda is "terrible", but I think there are so many better things I could be putting into my body. Like juice .

Can I join? (Look at my avatar!)
I've had a Pepsi every day of my life for the last 20+ yrs. I want to give it up so bad but that would be a nightmare! I have 3-4 cans per DAY.

Hmm let's not go there. I have a terrible juice habit. I kind of replaced the soda habit with a juice habit. Shhhh, don't tell.

lol.. I like Code Red mt. Dew. However, the grape reminds me of Shasta Grape soda. I hear ya. Juice is better for ya. Grape juice is my all time favorite. Imof..(lmao) when I was in the hospital with my youngest, I drank grape juice all the time the nurse brought the snacks around. I thought I was going to turn into the "grape ape". I cant seem to stomach Orange juice very good. For some weird reason, Acid reflux and orange juice dont mix. (yeck) lol
Remember, ya can accomplish ANYTHING ya set your mind to. YOU CAN DO IT! Best wishes. |
