SN questions

Hello. I am new here but not to adoption. We have an LID of 4/20/2007 and I am getting nervous about the wait times. My dh and I aren't getting any younger and I am afraid at this rate it may be more than 5 more years before we bring our dd home. I am looking into our agency SN program at this point. My question is... who can I talk to about the list of possible medical condtions we would be able to handle. The list seems very scary but many tell me that with China adoption it may not be as bad as it sounds. Who can we talk to about weather the condtions are indeed minor and which ones are major comditions that we could not handle at this point in our lives? Any advice would be great.

Kathleen

RainbowKids.com Adoption Information, Support, Child Photolistings, Articles and Resources has some good SN articles that you might want to take a look at. Also, a lot of the SN conditions have non-profits dedicated to them here in the U.S. with websites that you can check (CL/CP for one).

This may sound odd since you don't have a referral yet, but I think I would try to schedule an appointment with an international adoption doctor. We ended up speaking to one when we were trying to decide on a country and just wanted some perspective on health conditions, etc. It was enormously helpful because the doctor had evaluated referrals from lots of countries and then had followed up and had patients adopted from all over the world. He'd seen a lot of different conditions and could tell us a great deal about what they entailed.

Good luck!

SN questions

Bunnygirl

What a great resource that I didn't even know existed!

One thing I tell other parents who are considering a SN adoption (our youngest was a SN from China) is that when you consider adopting a child with a SN that you think about the worse case scenario of that SN and think about if your family would have the resources and ability to deal with it.

While there are so many success stories and sometimes happy surprises when adopting a SN child, there are also situations where the SN may be more serious than in the referral paperwork and/or the initial surgeries once home are not successful.

Good luck with your decision.

Take a look at
http://www.nohandsbutours.com/

There is a listing of sn plus family stories.

We were NSN with a lid of 9/11/06. Wow three ago! We have been home since 2/1/2008 with our little boy Ricky who has a cleft lip/palate. If you want more information on cl/cp let me know.

We went over the checklist from our agency with my pediatrician. I see on your siggie that you already have one at home. I wonder if he or she would consider going over it with you. My pediatrician was wonderful in helping me to make the decisions.
