Over than 40 BMI and need advice

I know that CCAA requires that both parent be under 40BMI. I am but my husband is not. He is a short and stocky guy and will not be under 40BMI unless he starves himself. Our agency said to get a medical report from our doctor stating he has low blood pressure and low cholesterol. (which he does) and photos.

My question here is has anyone been refused from being accepted into and agency because of the 40BMI? OR if you had problems with the the BMI, what did you do to get accepted?

Thanks a million!

Hi,

I'll be honest with you. I thought there was no wiggle room regarding the BMI in terms of the Chinese government (CCAA). I thought their rules effective May 07 were consistent of no parent with a BMI over 40. Personally, I'd be a bit hesitant of an agency telling me otherwise. Just my 2 cents though.

It was also my understanding that they will not budge on health requirements. There are some things that they will budge on, but health and BMI, it's my understanding, they will not.
However, keep in mind that 40 BMI for me is not the same for you....etc. Regardless of his height, the BMI is adjusted for that. It's not the same weight ranges for everyone, it's a simple process of figuring out his healthy weight ranges for his height.
We rushed to be DTC before May 07 because that was one thing that I didn't want to have to worry about, with my own weight. Im not over the 40BMI but with the wait times and with my weight flexuations, who knows where I would be 2 years from now.

I also was under the impression that the health requirements were not flexible. I would talk to your agency again and have them clarify things for you. I would hate for you to proceed with the adoption only to find out you did not qualify.

I was told by our agency that CCAA was very strict on the BMI? In fact they told a couple they would need to choose another country due to this...

Thank you

Thank you for all that have replied. it is my dream to have a daughter but maybe China is not the way to go if they are that strict on the BMI. I really appreciate all your responses. AT last I know that I have to consider this in our adoption plans. I was told that if we could get a doctor's note stating his health, they would talk to CCAA and advocate for us regarding BMI. and there could be a possisibility of adopting from China.

Thanks again but maybe another country would be better suited.

If your agency said they might be able to advocate on your behalf, and you still want to try, ask them how much money they want up front, and if it is at all refundable. Also ask them if they get a negative response from China, then can you switch to another country with that agency, with all the already paid fees switched over as well.

We adopted under the old rules but might be looking to adopt again. We were with a very large china only agency and I recently asked them this very question.

They told me no they have seen CCAA budge on this even for a waiting child which is what we would be interested in.

I respect their answer and honestly I wouldn't bank on any agency telling me differently unless you can get your money back if CCAA's response is negative.
