Peeling cheeks
Does anyones daughter's cheeks peel? We noticed that when she was teething her cheeks would get red and warm and then get really dry. Well, now it seems like they are constantly peeling. We thought maybe she got some extra sun that caused it to peel. Then I thought maybe I was putting on too much lotion and it wasn't getting washed off enough.. causing it to peel off, but now it just seems like they are peeling and peeling. I felt her cheek one night after bed and it was all soft and no extra skin for peeling, but then first thing in the morning it was back.
One side seems to be worse than the other, but the other side that isn't peeling so much seems to have tiny scabs on it. It just seems silly to take her to the drs for it, but the peeling doesn't seem to be coming to an end. Any thoughts? Thanks

OK, this is either the most stupid answer or the most ingenious (I'm not saying which I think it is.
)Keep in mind, I'm a first-time parent (well, soon to be I hope.) Would her cheeks be peeling because she is growing?

I don't think so because if her cheeks would be peeling because she was growing then her whole body would too... wouldn't it? I mean we do lose alot of layers of skin and she might lose more because she's growing but, it's hard to explain, it just is in one around of the cheeks and the skin is alittle lighter than the rest of her face underneath. That's why we thought it might be sunburn. But you know, we are first time parents too and just because she's home doesn't mean we know everything. ![]()

I don't know if this is the problem or not, but many Chinese children have a problem with dry skin. My friend Karen has to use prescription lotion for her child daily. I lotion Lydia on a regular basis.
Also, as an aside, many Chinese children have problems with excessive (and hard) ear wax. I have to use debrox nightly for Lydia as hers clog up badly. |

Margaux has really bad dry skin on her cheeks too and it does look like little scabs sometimes. I just try to rub stuff on her face but she hates it!

Ok, so it sounds like it is just a dry skin problem.
I guess we'll just have to lotion, lotion, lotion them and just try and rub it off like you do Couchkat. Thanks everyone! I figured you guys could help me out! ![]()

Could it be an allergy to sunscreen? Our daughter breaks out on her cheeks occasionally, and the only correlation that we and our pediatrician can find is sunscreen. Our pediatrician did say this is a fairly common allergy for Asian children, and that most of them can use Aveeno without causing a problem. Our daughter breaks out with the Aveeno, too. It only causes problems on her face, though, not anywhere else.

I wouldn't just go by what we are saying, I'd take her to her doctor. It's possible she may need prescription lotion for a specific skin irritation like my friend's daughter.

I would also take her to the pediatrician. She could have eczema or some other condition requiring special meds. My son has dry cheeks and we do vaseline every night. It could be a sensitivity to the detergent her bedding is washed in and whichever side she sleeps most on is the one that is worse in the morning.....it would also explain why is was smooth before bed and peeling in the morning. But to be sure, I think you should have her looked at.

I was thinking this was a possiblity. Kinda interesting how it only occurs on the face isn't it. So I guess it is off to the doctors. I thought it would be silly to take her for it, but by the sound of it, it wouldn't be. Thanks again everyone.

Kennedy does have very dry skin that is common with Asian people but my other daughter Kathryn has bery sensitive sking that gets the worst excema you can imagine. We have to use a prescription lotion at times and then baby oil, vaseline and jergens to help. I would take her to the dr just to be sure and they may have some advice since we cannot see the problem. I think she is probably fine and just has very dry skin but I would just take her in and have it looked at quickly. They will not mine!

I kind of thought the same thing about taking our daughter to the doctor, but we were there for our younger daughter's 9 month well-visit, so I thought I would ask. |
