China Adoptions and Anti-Depressants

I know this is a new regultions. I have been having hard time finding the regulation in writing but I have been getting a lot of conflicting info. I have read that it is people on anti-depressants in general but then an adoption agency listed it as being on anti-depressants for a severe mental problem. Anyone know anything about this?

TIA
Amanda

My understanding is if you have been on an anti-depressant during the last 2 years, you will not be eligible to adopt effective 5/1/07

I've seen one agency report no major depressions plus no current diagnosis of depression or anxiety or currently on medication for depression or anxiety

With other agencies they report the anti-depressants within the last 2 years rule

It's frustrating to see all of the various interpretations

I take anti-depressants for IBS so that is frustrating to me.

I have been wondering about this new rule too, as my dh was just prescribed an anti-anxiety med to help him quit smoking. So, it has nothing to do with depression/ anxiety....that's just what doctor's prescribe for quitting. Seems silly to be ineligible when you are actually trying to better yourself and improve your health.

I would talk with an agency. It is possible if your doctor will certify that your use of anti-depressants isn't for depression, you may be able to pursue adoption from China.

This is what our agency sent when the CCAA released new regs. I don't know if this is uniform with all agencies. I also remind that this is all new and no one is sure of interpretation. It's best to confirm all this with an agency.

Families are not eligible to adopt if any of the following apply:

Diagnosed with major depression or any other severe mental health
concern;
Current diagnosis of depression or anxiety or currently on medication
for depression or anxiety
Diagnosed with alcoholism within the last 10 years;
Any surgery within the last year;
One or both parents use a wheelchair or mobility aid;
Any diagnosis of cancer within the last three years;
Active Hepatitis A, B, or C; or
Both parents have epilepsy.
BMI over 40.
All health issues will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Thank you for the replies. I did email the agency that we plan on working with, but since we are not even in the paper chase yet, I'm sure answering my email won't be very high on their priority list. I am sure they have been bombarded with all sorts of questions from concerned families waiting to adopt from China.

My husband takes an anti-depressant for a damaged nerve and we were told by our agency that before they could determine our eligibility they would need to do what they call an eligibility check and include a letter from his doctor stating that he had never been diagnosed with depression or anxiety and explaining the reason he takes the medication.

Hope this helps.

I heard back from the agency I emailed and they said none within the two years prior to beginning the process.
