Immunization Question

Hello,

I have a question for those who have already gotten their immunizations, specifically Hepatitis A and B. So, I went a few weeks ago to get my first set and they gave me the Hepatitis A and B together and then told me to come back in a month and get the 2nd Hepatitis B and Tetnus. My niece also went to get hers at another clinic and they told her that you're not suppossed to get both Hepatitis shots at the same time, though they couldn't tell her why, just that it stated so in the TX Department of Health literature they were referencing. Anyway, I was curious if anyone else was told this and why, seeing as how I got both at the same time, I'm wondering now if it's ok. I'm assuming my doctor wouldn't have done so if it wasn't alright, but still it makes me wonder.

Thanks,
Miranda

My wife and I both got out Hep A and B at the same time. We each have our own doctor's as well and neither mentioned any issues regarding getting them at the same time.

Hi, I would like to hear any info on this also. I went in July and got the Hep A and B combo, but they told me to come back in 6 months for my second shot...are there any healthcare professionals that know the answer to this one?

I am not a health care professional, but i think I found out where they got it. When you get your child's shots they give out info papers with them. On the one I found for Hep B it says that it is not to be given with other shots. Here is the TX Dept. of Health's web site: Immunizations Branch, Vaccine Information Statements (VIS)

Well that's interesting, considering there is a combination Hep A and Hep B shot called Twinrix. I don't think they would make that if it wasn't okay to give both at the same time.

Perhaps it is just something that is pertaining to giving shots to children because of their weight and development, etc?

Hmm, I know that Twinrix is not recommended for people under 18 years old (Hep A and Hep B), but there is a vaccine called Pediarix which combines 5 things: Hep B, Polio, and DpT....so it might be okay to give other stuff with the Hep B, just not Hep A and B together in people under 18....

Hmm.....I was a little confused by it too, as I thought I'd heard of people getting them both together. So, hearing from all you just makes me feel better about it then. To tell you the truth, the lady who told her that didn't sound like she had first hand knowledge, that's why she couldn't say why it wasn't a good idea, just that that's what the literature said. So, I was thinking maybe it was some kind of misunderstanding. I figured who better to ask then everyone here since I was sure there had to be people who had already been there and done that. And, I was curious. Thanks for all the responses.

We got the combo A and B vaccine, too, and it hasn't been an issue at all.

The Hepatitis vaccination can be given as a "Combo" shot called Twinrix. The first shot is given and then the second given three months later with the final shot given six months after that. If you have ever had one of these vaccinations separately you need to inform your doctor or heal professional and they will address which series to continue or begin. You can also contact your county health dept. as they keep records for immunizations. The only reason I know about this is because I am responsible for having the employees at my company vaccinated for Hepatitis and the Twinrix costs roughly about $50.00. Hope this is helpful!
