Today is my little girl's birthday. She is 1 year old today and I'm so sad that I can't be there with her
. By the time we get to travel to pick her up will probably be in about 3 months or so.

Although I know that she'll be home in a few months, it still makes me sad today that I can't be there to celebrate her 1st birthday with her.

Hugs to you, I know you must be sad, but think about the joy that is coming your way and the MANY, MANY happy birthdays to come! Maybe you could send one of those birthday cake care packages for her to celebrate until you can come and get her! You will be a forever family before you know it! Jan

We received our referral at the end of January last year and our daughters b'day is Feb 18. We still celebrated and had a cake, she just wasn't with us to enjoy it (I ate her piece...).

Yeah, I know how you feel. We got our daughter 2 weeks after her first birthday. Broke my heart but I can tell you that after just celebrating her 3rd birthday this past Saturday (the 2nd birthday that we got to celebrate with her) you will be able to make it up and even more!

We also had a little "party" with my parents for Olivia's 1st birthday and she was still in China. It was a very emotional party but it was ok because we had our travel dates by then and knew that she would never have to celebrate another birthday without us again (obviously at least until she got alot older).

My heart totally goes out to you. We missed Lydia's first birthday by two days. I was heartbroken!! It's okay to be sad about it. It's okay to mourn that loss. It is a loss. I still, over a year later, wish we could have met her even a day before her birthday. Big hugs!

Hi All! Thanks so much for the hugs and well wishes. My nephew came into town today and brought a birthday present for her. He custom made a build a bear for her. It made my day. Even though she couldn't be here with us, she was in our thoughts and prayers.

We also missed our daughter's first birthday by a matter of weeks. I cognitively understood it-but emotionally, I was pretty down that day. So, what I did was I shopped for her on her birthday (gifts, paper plates etcs). Then after we were home for a few weeks, we choose one afternoon and celebrated her birthday. It was just the 3 of us (dh, Lily and myself). We were just relaxing at home, had a little decorated cake, blew up balloons and opened presents.

It was a very happy, sweet day. I think the celebration was as much for me as anyone else--but my dd had a great time. We took pictures of it and I've put them in her scrapbook. It may not have been her actual birthday--but it was her first birthday party
