Question Adoption & Pregnancy

My DH & I have decided that we definitely want to adopt from China & are planning on starting the process next month. We have been trying to have a child together (We have 2 from my previous marriage) for over 3yrs. If I am not pregnant this month then we are going to start the adoption process.

My question is this: What happens if I get pregnant during the next 12-18mos while we are in the process? Will they stop our adoption? I am trying to decide if we would need to be on birth control or if we could keep trying. Does it differ from agency to agency or is it a country requirement to stop an adoption if the mother becomes pregnant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tracey

I know my agency will put your adoption on hold if you get pregnant. They want one year in between bringing children into the home. So you would have to wait until your baby turned one before you could accept a referral from China. I'm not sure about the actual CCAA requirements though.

I think Tauri is right. How this is handled depends on the agency you are with. You might want to ask beforehand if it will change how you proceed.

Best of luck to you!

It really is an agency thing. Our agency is fine with someone getting pregnant during the adoption process. I know of 2 waiting families now who have unexpectedly found themselves in this situation. Other agencies do require you putting the adoption on hold, though.

Be sure to check with your agency. Our agency told us that they would stop the process at ANY TIME PRIOR TO PLACEMENT if we there was an unplanned pregnancy. (They are of the mind set that there should be 1 year between introduction of new children in the family...)

Good luck on your decision!

Funny timing. . .

Funny that I should log on for the first time in a few weeks and find this here. I just got off the phone with our agency, telling them that we are 11 weeks pregnant. Adoption was our first choice for how to have our first child, and when the wait suddenly become so long and unpredictable, we decided to go ahead with a pregnancy and worry about timing later. For now, we are continuing with our adoption application, and our agency is very supportive of that. We have the option of post-poning our referral by 6 months (which we very well may do), and we of course have to meet with our social worker to discuss the implications of "artificial twinning", finances, family roles, stress, etc. If the pace of referrals doesn't change, and if we add a postponement, it could very well end up that our children are about the same age, coming into the family about a year apart. Now we are expecting x2!

Good luck with your decision-making-- If you haven't yet picked an agency, this may be a make-it-or-break-it issue. I remember asking about this when agency-shopping, and how glad I am now!

Simbela - I just realized it was you! I've been watching for you to post your LID so I could update our stats list.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm so glad you have an agency who will work with you.

Our agency leaves the decision to you. They are fine if you get pregnant and want to continue with the adoption. That makes sense to me.

Gina

By the way, have you checked out any other Asian countries? Taiwan is faster and the trip over is shorter. The cost is comparable. I know Vietnam is a good choice too. I understand if you feel called to China, but it is taking so long right now I thought you might like to know of other options.
