Brown Envelope Question
HI!
I'm sure it's been on here several times, but what's up with the brown envelope from the Consulate? We are DTC- not LID yet- & got our brown envelope. I think I remember seeing on here we do nothing with it- but save it, is that correct? Wish the referrals were as fast as the brown envelope was :-) Melissa

The brown envelope has forms you will need while you are in China. In addition, I believe the letter has your 'GUZ' number on it. Your agency will need this number in order to make your consolate appointment.

I have been told some people don't even get the brown envelope. We haven't received one. Our agency said not to worry.

We got our brown envelope about a week after returning from China. LOL! Its not a big deal if you don't have it. Our agency did tell us to email the Consulate for our GUZ # right before we got our referral (or maybe right after--I am not sure). They emailed me within hours with the number. A few months after being LID, if you didn't get the brown envelope, find out from you agency the Consulate email address and get that number from the Consulate. Its very rare however it is up to your USCIS office to send your approval to the Consulate and I have heard, only maybe once or twice, that the Consulate never received the information. It rarely happens however just to be sure because you don't want to wait until it is too late and are waiting for your consulate appt.

We received ours the night I arrived in China, or the day before in Fl. The agency took care of getting the GUZ. THe big thing to remember is if you're traveling without your spouse, all of the forms need to be filled out differently. In our case my dh had been the petitioner the whole time, so we signed and notarized everything that way. Repeated questions to the agency regarding these forms were never answered. WEll guess what? We got to CHina, and the night before our CA we were filling out paperwork, and ours were filled out wrong. Since I traveled alone I became the petitioner. After a few very tense days, and the added expense of my dh fed exing new signed and notarized forms everything went thru. Did I mention this was right before the CCAA shut down for CNY? Anyway, if you travel alone have your agency rep go over those with a fine toothed comb. Shelley

The 'brown envelope' is sent to you by the US Consulate in Guangzhou once they have received notification of your approved I-600A (the I-171h) but it sounds like not eveyone receives them.

I'm whether if/when you get the brown envelope depends on when your USCIS office sends info to Guangzhou. If so, I'm not surprised that people out of Atlanta haven't gotten brown envelopes. That office is struggling to keep up with issuing 797s!
