possibly moving overseas... problem?
My dh & I are just starting our homestudy process/paper chase, and while on a business trip overseas, he has learned that there is a possibility that they could need him there on a 1 or 2 year assignment starting next year sometime. It would be entirely voluntary, but something I think he would not want to pass up.
Before I go asking our SW and throw up a bunch of red flags, I thought I would ask here, is it possible to adopt, then move out of the country? Again, the move wouldn't be permenant, most likely for 1 to 2 years at the most. I would hate for this to put a halt to our plans! Any advice or thoughts are greatly appreciated!

We are in the same situation. We asked our homestudy agency and our placement agecny and both said that it is not a big deal. We we're told that we would need a social worker to visit our new home for a quick update. We would also need to update our I 171H. Neither agency seemed to have a problem with us moving to another country while still waiting for a referal as long as we updated everything.

We live overseas and are currently paperchasing. I can't see where you would have a problem. If you haven't signed with an agency yet I would just make sure that they have experience working with ex-pats. You may also want to make sure that you'll be able to get a home study update where you're going - I know there are a few agencies that work in Europe but I'm not sure about other parts of the world.
If you complete your adoption while living overseas you'll probably want to plan on travelling to the US from China so that you can get your child a US passport. Just a thought - will you be maintaining a US residence if you go overseas? If so, I wonder if it will be necessary to update paperwork. |

This is good to hear. If we go, it will be Asia Pacific somewhere... Most likely Singapore, Kuala Lumur or Manila, which all have big expat communities. It's still early and nothing has even been offered at this point, but I'm trying to think ahead.
We are actually signed with an agency, so I'll ask our SW what their guidelines are. If we go, it would only be for a year to 2 years and, yes, we would maintain a US residence while away. I'm not sure yet how I would logistically handle everything. Seems like a lot of work for 1 or 2 years, but it could mean a huge huge career move for my DH... and an opportunity for me to work PT from there or not at all... Thanks for the thoughts! I appreciate it!

We just relocated from New York to Tokyo. We are awaiting our referral hopefully this month and it is not a problem. We are getting an adendum to our homestudy done by a social worker here, and will stop in Honolulu prior to returning to Tokyo to get our daughter's passport, COE and file for the SS number.
Not a problem, just more paperwork.. Jennifer www.chinanybaby.blogspot.com |
