Flying thru Chicago
DH & I would like to use United for our trip. If we do use them, they go thru Chicago. I've heard from someone that Chicago's customs is really hard to go thru. Is this true? This person was even told not to go thru Chicago with their 1st adoption. I'm not sure if they'll do the same with their 2nd.
Our main airline in Mpls is Northwest but we're afraid to use them because of all the striking. What is your experience with this? What do they do when you go thru customs? We've been to Mexico a few months after 9/11 & I don't remember it being extra difficult. Thanks everyone ![]() |

We went thru Chicago last July with our daughter. It was fine. Just allow yourself PLENTY of time between flights to get from the international area to domestic. We had barely 2 hours (it may have been more like 1 1/2) and we knew we were 'pushing it' and might miss our connection.
If you're not familiar with O'Hare definitely have a good 3 hours between flights. We had a tough time getting from one area to the other and barely barely made our flight. Airport personnel were helpful though! Joanne |

Joanne - Thank you so much for that advice...I'll keep that in the back of my mind to get a flight that allows us time to get to the next airplane. We also really want United because from Mpls it appears they have 1 less stop compared to NW. I just want to get there...the less stops the better

In Nov 04 I went through Chicago and I had no problems. I found them nice and I was travleing withput my husband so my paperwork was a little differant. I do agree on the plenty of time for any customs and next flight.

I recently flew United from Hong Kong to Chicago with my daughter in July and I had no problems whatsoever even though I got lost and ended up going through security twice.
The customs officer who went through my paperwork was so nice I could not believe it. She quickly went through my paperwork and sent me on my way. Both customs and security were nice and they led me through without any problems. The only thing I can say is that there was a long line, but just make sure that when you get off the plane, you go to the line for American Citizens because sometimes people get confused and end up in the line for foreigners. It took me about forty minutes to get through the line and another fifteen minutes waiting to get my paper work checked only because there was one person ahead of me. If there are many other families ahead of you, then this is when you will have a longer wait. The customs officer took about five minutes going through the paperwork, so that was fast. Good luck.

We flew out of Chicago and back through last month with our newly adopted son. We would definatly advise extra time. Our connection was delayed but we wouldn't have made it anyway. The people were all friendly and helpful. However we were told that we had to go to the line for foreigners, as our child was such until we got through immigration.
