birth order question
Hi Everyone!
I am hoping someone can answer my question. Is it a CCAA rule that you cannot adopt out of birth order, or is it an agency rule? I know my agency says you can't, but I didn't know if it was just their policy. We really want 2 children from China, but with the extended wait times, I think we will be too old for a second child IF that child has to be younger than the first. This wait has really thrown a monkey-wrench into our plans!! We planned to be paper chasing for #2 at this time, and we haven't even gotten our referral for #1 yet. ****sigh***** |

Sounds like an agency policy to me. I know of a few people who have adopted WC that were out of their birth order...so it can be done.

Agency policy. CCAA says NOTHING about that. I have a friend who has daughter who is 2.7 years old that she adopted at 1 yr. in 2005, and she adopted a little boy with cleft lip repaired/unrepaired cleft palate june of this year and he'll be 3 in August. He was about 2 months off of his 3rd birthday when she adopted him. So, the CCAA doesn't care.

It is not a China rule.
Some agencies permit adoptions out of birth order, so check around when you are ready to adopt your second child. However, once you have your first child home, be sure that you become familiar with some of the concerns about adopting out of birth order, so you can decide if they apply in your family's situation. Birth Order
When our social worker came for this adoption home study- we were talking about ages we would accept & prefer. I told her part of me wanted Annabelle (now 2 1/2- adopted at 7 weeks old) Part- of me wanted to keep her my littlest, and my "baby" but the social worker is the one who said it is best for the children to keep the birth order. My agency never said anything. It does make sense, I suppose, but at this age (2 1/2) I didn't think it would be an issue.

We are currently thinking along the same lines as you. We possibly will want to adopt a slightly older child than the first and we are waiting on our LID for the first right now! We also are getting awful close to being over the age requirements, but I also think they look at each case on an individual basis! Thank goodness! WAITING!
