? about weather and baby clothes
We will be traveling soon, first to Beijing, then to Jiangxi Province and of course onward to Guangzou. Travel will be mid to end of June. I understand these places will be warm then. Has anyone travelled at that time of year to know how to dress the baby? Also, I understand that the Chinese like to see the babies covered up. So what happens when it's hot there? Should we still expect to cover her up? Thanks for any help!

I was in Guangzhou in mid-May. The weather was warm but not unbearable. When I received my daughter, she had on a cute Hello Kitty sun-dress. The only time I encountered any Chinese fussing was when I was standing in the sun watching the older ladies do ballroom dancing in the park. They insisted I come in the shade with them.
I would suggest bringing sweaters and/or a blanket as the hotel lobbies and buses are cold - they over air-condition. |

In Guangzhou (2 trips where our girls were both from Guangdong Province) we found no 'clothing police'.
Guangzhou is like southern FL. We were there early July and it was incredibly hot and humid. Families there last June faced much rainfall and there was flooding in Guangzhou. The storms would be short and fierce in terms of the amount of rainfall. There are no storm drains / drainage systems like we know from in the US. HOtels provide umbrellas. Beijing will be cooler but still summer weather. You can goggle weather sites to get a real good idea of the weather Joanne |

I totally agree. I would bring warmer PJ's for Guangzhou. Anywhere else, the hotels don't usually have that great of air conditioning. We, too, expected to deal with the "Granny patrol". It was never an issue. We dressed our daughter comfortably, and so did everyone else in our group. Have a great trip!!! ![]() |

We had a lot of encounters with clothing police. All good natured. The babies are used to being kept warm, so just make sure you keep them in light clothes with sleeved and long pants and make sure you keep them hydrated. I brought along a lot of powered liquidlyte and that was a Godsend!
Also...more often than not the CP's were "onto" me and Russ about our clothes more than the baby's. We wore short sleeves and on a 75 degree day they were approaching us about our clothes!! (Lydia had a blanket over her, so she was acceptable.) I'd never heard of the parents being policed before, but Russell and I got it a couple of times. It was all good natured, but still very surprising. |

I was in Nanchang, Jiangxi province last year June 22nd thru July3. All I can say is it was hotter than you know what..and the humidity was awful.. I swore I would never go back to China in the summer again. ..but guess what I will be heading back in August or Sept as soon as my TA gets here.. Everything for the most part was air conditioned...I wore shorts and sleeveless shirts everyday and the kids all wore dresses or shorts and some lightweight pants and tshirts. We bought sandals for the kids at Walmart when we got there also. The sightseeing was limited during the day due to the heat... we did go out and walk around at night and went to the pool.

Just got back from Nanchang last month- lots of humidity already and the clothing police were def. tsk-tsking. No CP in Guangzhou, though the Chinese are still wearing jeans and long sleeves when it is sweltering, but they all know that the Americans were sweating and would frequently turn a fan on when you would walk into a shop. While your baby doesn't need to be coverd as much in Guangzhou make sure you use sun screen. Obviously for skin safety but also because it is considered a sign of beauty to be pale in China so wearing hats and caring sun umbrellas are common.
You can buy tons of baby clothes in Guangzhou- very cute and very cheap- both traditional Chinese and western styles.
