We are going to apply for a US Passport for our daughter. Could someone please tell us if we will need send to send our original Citizenship Certificate and Adoption Decree with the application? I have not been able to find the answer on the travel.state.gov website. I hate to send original documents
Thank you, Beth Anne NYC

I would highly recommend going to your local post office to get the passport. Both parents must be present to apply for a childs passport anyway. I would bring the originals and ask them to make copies or bring the copies with you.
I did have to send original documents when my husband did a step-parent adoption for my oldest daughter, (for her name change) and they came back fine. PS. We got home on the same day with our daughter in Newark (Cont. flight from H.K to Newark!) |

Thank you for responding so quickly. I will bring copies of everything and hope that those will be sufficient. How funny that we were on the same flight!!!

We applied for our daughter's passport at our post office. They insisted on receiving the original documents. They sent them all back to us rather quickly (I did feel a bit uneasy about it, though)

I don't know for sure the answer to your question, but I will tell you this.
When we applied for a passport for our bio son, we had to send in his original birth certificate. I didn't want to do it either, but it came back.

I'm virtually certain that the Passport office requires original documents. If you apply at the post office you know they'll be sent via trace-able mail. I don't think there's any way around sending originals.

Yep, you have to send the original documents. I just got a passport for my daughter 2 months ago and I had to send them. Sorry. they did come back so don't worry......even though I know you will. I did.
