thanks for the tip. my husband wass born in italy and we were intending to get his certificate through the consulate but we're here now for a brief visit and he can take care of it right away. good suggestion.

also, we were married in NYC so it's useful to know the info about the marriage certificate as well.

a question: my name is actually misspelled on the marriage certificate. it was a huge deal to fix it so we never did. is that going to be a problem?

Hi. My husband was born in Portugal. If your husband has a U.S. passport, that's all he needs. China will accept a copy of the U.S. passport photo page in lieu of a foreign birth certificate. It's A LOT easier than tracking down the birth certificate and having it translated.

Hi marniebat,
When my husband and I bought our house 10 years ago, we were very young and impressionable. The lawyer's office for our closing spelled my name wrong and basically bullied me into signing it "Christine" on everything instead of "Christina." They included a one-page addendum, but never fixed it. It's caused a lot of problems over the years. We think with our most recent re-finance that we may finally have gotten in fixed. We realize now we should have told that lawyer's office to redo it right then and there since it has been their fault!

I would call your Department of Vital Records and ask what to do to fix it. Perhaps you could take several forms of ID to prove your correct spelling. I have no idea whether or not it would be a problem for the adoption, but I'm leaning towards yes with the dossier requirements being so strict. I wish you the best of luck!

no US passport (yet). we were able to get his BC for our marriage without too much hassle. here it's a one-day deal. at the consulate it's not much harder. thanks!

i noticed it right away (though it's not really very noticeable if you just read the page: they spelled Marnie Marne and the font they use makes it look like there *might* be an I there).

anyway, we got married with a passport, a copy of the BC and $35 but to CHANGE it we needed my original BC (??) and it would cost $250. we decided not to bother, ebcause who needs to ever show the marriage certificate, right?



FWIW when we registered our marriage in italy we just said "it's spelled wrong, it should be marnie" and they made it correct on the italian version.
