travel advice

I just posted our travel packing list on our web site for our upcoming trip to China to pick up our little girl. We got our TA for travel on Friday and we're leaving this Friday. Only 7 days to get ready but it finally seems real!

http://www.internationaladoptionstories.com/packing.htm

Anyone have any thing they couldn't live without when you traveled?

I would love a list from someone who has gone and now knows what was worth bringing and what wasn't. I saw one somewhere but I can't remember where.

Thanks for the list, and I like your site! A lot of good info.

Here's another site I've found helpful during the wait. It's just one individuals thoughts on travel to China.

http://www.bartlett-sloan.net/triplist.html#questions

Here's a snippit from the site:

"Suggested chow includes assorted nuts, cup o' soup, ramen, prunes, coffee bags, tea bags, peanut butter, prunes, saltines, granola bars, Pringles, prunes, chocolate bars, gum, and dried fruit, especially prunes. And don't forget plastic utensils. And prunes."

These lists of packing items are great. I just want to emphasize how great Ziplock bags in the gallon size are. You will use them far more than you can imagine.

I also recommend a plastic bottle with a screw-on cap and spout with marked liquid measures. This was invaluable when trying to measure out the right amount of water per dry formula on the fly. I found one at my local supermarket.

Also, bring a small bottle of dishwashing liquid and liquid laundry detergent for washing bottles out and for doing laundry on the cheap in your hotel room.

The original poster's list seems fairly similar to our list. We are actually taking less than they did. We talked with a couple families that went to the same area that we did and they made some maps for us and there is a both a department store and Walmart within walking distance of our hotel in Nanchang. I figure that if we need something we will be able to get it (or something that will work) at one of those two places.

My goal is to pack as light as possible and buy disposable stuff when possible. Disposable may not be as environmentally friendly, but it is less cleaning and easier for us to deal with. Plus, as we use stuff, we clear space in the luggage and that makes room for other stuff to bring home. Right now, we are using two 28" suitcases and I think we will have half of one of them empty.

Hello John,

We came back from China last month. You might want to bring at least 3 cans of baby formula powder and a lactose free formula (just in case) because we ended up using the small cans in 3 days!!!

Cheers,

Mashimoro

"Anyone have any thing they couldn't live without when you traveled?"

A sense of humor, wonder and go-with-the-flow attitude!

Ok, that's 3 things!
