getting started?

Hi,
My husband and I are hoping to adopt in China or South East Asia. We are Australian's but spend most of our lives living overseas working as teachers. Our newest posting starting in August is in Guangzhou China where we plan to get the ball rolling on the adoption process... only we don't know where to start!

Is it best to go through local authorities, an agency or home government organisations?

Please if anyone has any advice or can relate to living overseas and adopting from abroad, please we would love to hear your story.

Thank you.

Aly & Dave

you might want to ask Jane Liedtke of Our Chinese Daughters Foundation. Jane lives in Beijing with her adopted daughter and may be able to connect you with Australians living in China.

Hi Aly,

I don't have any advice for as far as adopting from China while living in China (though I know it can be done, as we know two families who have done it!), but you would probably not want to contact the local authorities about it first--talk to an agency instead, as talking to local authorities about anything can be tricky!

Also, on an OT note, I just wanted to say that I hope you enjoy your position in Guangzhou! My husband and I taught in Xiamen from 2002-2004, which is not too far from Guangzhou. We loved it, and I hope you have a great experience as well!
