I now live in England UK and have just started to trace. I am told it was a closed adoption, what does that mean? I'm totally new to this!

I was adopted in 1962, in Elmira, New york. Catholic family services will not give me any identifying information on my birth mother. I am now 40 years old and feel I have the right to know where I come from. Any suggestions of how to proceed in finding my birth mother?
