Does the baptismal gown have to be completely white? My sister is making the dress and would like to put some tiny pink bows on it. Is that ok??

Any input would be appreciated!

I don't see why not. I don't believe there is a requirement that it be all white. If they aren't huge I think a touch of color would be very pretty. Maybe ask you parish office and see if they have those requirements?

Our daughter wore an all white satin and lace one with two tiny pink roses on the bodice. Her slippers had pink roses, too. Father never said anything was wrong with that. You might want to talk with your priest for customs in your parish, but in our parish it isn't an issue.

I don't think there's any requirement that they be all white---or even white at all---certainly wasn't mentioned to us, and we baptized at the cathedral, which is the most traditional of the churches in our diocese.

H wore the gown that had been in his birthmother's family for 60 years---it was made from a WWII parachute one of their family members had worn. As one might expect from silk that old, it's ivory now.

My nephew was baptized in a blue and white outfit.
A couple months ago, my niece was baptized in a white and pink dress.
I think the white is tradition, but not required.

Our son wore ivory on his baptism day as well. Yes, white is traditional, but just as brides wear ivory and blush, so can babies! I think the gown sounds beautiful!

God doesn't care what color the dress is. We do. If you like the pink added in, go for it. It's about the sacrament, not the dress. In any event, I'm sure your daughter will be beautiful on her special day.

Pink is fine. The ONLY reason I would stay away from it is that I would really like our baptismal dress to become a family heirloom that others wear some day and I don't want it to be gender specific. But that's just me - I didn't have traditions like that, but my husband and I feel like we are the base of new family traditions - the healthy kind so we're big on stuff like this.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all your responses very much! My sister lives in another state so it is going to be such a treat to get the dress in the mail in the upcoming weeks!

This is our last baby so that is why it is a gender specific dress. We have already baptized 3 sons! They wore the family heirloom dress but were newborns when they were baptized. Due to the adoption L will be 7 months when she is baptized so unable to squeeze into the heirloom dress! She is a good little eater....

It sounds beautiful.

I had a hard time finding a gown for our son - for boys they had so many little suits. Some of the gowns were so obviously for little girls (and I saw some w/ pink embellishments).

I was able to special order ours (without spending hundreds of dollars!) from a Catholic bookstore about 30 minutes away. It is all while, but is a little unusual - it has crocheted lace trim w/ matching booties/hat/bib - and all have shamrocks with pearl centers in them! I LOVE it. Honoring hubby's Irish heritage, A's Irish patron saint, and it can be used again for either boy or girl.
