i'm thinking about being a social worker..comments?

Hi! I am new here, I hope this is the right place to post, if not I'm sorry!!!

I am a sophomore in high school, and I am thinking about being a social worker, specializing in either adoptions or child welfare. So could anyone tell me what the difference is? What is the average yearly salary? Are social workers needed? If I specialize in adoptions, would I go overseas any?

Thank you so much in advance! I hope this is the right place to post these questions...God Bless you all!! ~Joy

A social worker can be employed in various professional environments to schools, to hospitals to various non-profits and much more. Often times, one of the best ways to become a social worker is through a degree. Social work training can help you to get the work experience to be on your way to a successful career in this rewarding field.

Here is a book you might want to get:

Becoming a Social Worker: Reflections on a Clinicians Transformative Journey (Best of the New Social Worker, 1)
by Authors: Manfred J. Melcher
Released: 30 October, 2001
ISBN: 1929109075
Paperback

Here is another link for you:
How to become a social worker..

Now, having worked for Social Services in the past, there are different departments.. such as child welfare and adoption...

Child welfare - aids in the protection and care of children, intervention, crisis prevention and foster care....etc.

Adoptive services-Each state has their methods, but the state I lived in, had what they called 'blue' books, filled with children from the entire state that were free for adoption... The social worker was there to assist foster families, or other families in going thru the adoption process, screening, education, support, and placement.

Hope this helps, good luck,

Dawn

Hi Joy!

Just caught me as I was reading my emails! I found this site:

social worker salaries

It tells you what kinds of courses you should be taking now in H.S....

EARNINGS AND ADVANCEMENT

Earnings vary according to the type of employer (private or public), geographic location, and the individual's education, specialty, and experience. Private practitioners, administrators, teachers, and researchers generally earn more than workers in other specializations.

Nationally, in 1998, the median annual salary of Social Workers was $30,108. In late 1998, the average entry-level salary for college graduates with a bachelor's degree in social work was $22,321 per year. In hospitals, Social Workers with a M.S.W. degree averaged $37,000 per year in early 1998. In the federal government, Social Workers with an M.S.W. degree and no experience started at $31,195 (1999). The salaries of these federal government workers may be higher in some urban areas.

Employment is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2006, reflecting public and private response to the social service needs of a growing and aging population. Demand for Social Workers is governed by public and private funding of social service programs.

Have a GREAT day !

Dawn
