Haiti process

Hi there. We adopted our youngest daughter from Guatemala three years ago and are now very seriously adopting one or possibly two children from Haiti. Our prospective agency mentioned that 'things will probably shake out and they'll know more about Haiti' after the first of the year. Any idea what that means?

This board isn't very active so if you're interested in Haitian adoptions you might want to check other spots like Yahoo groups Haitian Angels. (I just happened to check it out of boredom today; sorry no one answered your question earlier.) That being said, I can explain what was meant by the agency. The only adoption law Haiti currently has was written in 1974. It is outdated and essentially prevents most people from adopting. However, this law is "bent" all the time which is why you see different orphanages/agencies in Haiti saying different age requirements, different number of years married, etc.. A new law is supposedly being written and the first of the year has been marked as a time when people will know more about how and when the new law might be implemented. However, we have been in process for 2 years and I can say from experience this is the 3rd time things have been supposedly changing and then nothing ended up happening. Haiti desparately needs a new law so hopefully something will come of this.
