Great question!
i would say definently independent adoption would be the way to go. Some agency fees seem to be so outrageous! At many of the orphanages in Haiti they do pretty much what an agency would do, they just don't charge for it! I know people say they can adopt from Haiti for about $10,000 if they go independent, but some of the agencies I have seen say $14,000 - $16,000 through them. I've also heard that it can be a lot faster to adopt independently, but I don't know about that for sure.

We are using an agency. It's looking like it will cost approx $15000 canadian. We are just in the translation stage though so the cost might increase as we progress. For example we were told the psychological assessment would cost 700 dollars. It ended up we paid 1500. However we recieved 800 dollars back from my insurance at work. Just had to have a doctor letter saying we had to have these assessments done.
Also check with your bank for adoption loans. The National bank of canada offers 20000 dollar adoption loans at a great rate. Canada now has some tax credits available as well depending on your province. I think you are in the US but these are a few things you could check into in your area.
Good luck
Karen

I don't know what the most affordable way is-- we will probably pay about $15-17K total (US dollars.) Of that about 1/3 is agency fees, 1/3 is IBESR feed, and the rest is travel, documents, translation, medical/pysch evals, etc.

Hope this input helps. We've found that the "little things" (copying, mailing, document acquisition, etc, passport renewal, etc. REALLY add up!)
