Canadian Citizen, in US, Intl Adoption

This was entered in 1999. Did you actually adopt - Canadian, non-resident, internationally?

We would like to do this, and have read that some people found out that it can work. But we haven't found anyone that said that it actually did work out.

If you have any, we'd love assistance.
Thank you.

Question Help

My husband and I are also trying to adopt from China (we are both Canadians living in Florida)- does anyone know how to do this? Is it possible?

I have heard of a Canadian family living in U.S. adopting from Ukraine, but nothing about China.

Not sure if it helps,
Victoria

Canadian Citizens in USA cannot adopt intl

Hi,
Thanks for responding to our question about adopting internationally. We have found out that until we have US citizenship - at least one of us (you have to have the Greencard for a min. of 5 years to start working on getting US citizenship), that Canadian citizens living in the US cannot adopt anywhere internationally.

So we are now about to start a domestic adoption!
We had it in our minds that we were going to help a baby internationally. But we are now adjusting to the change and have decided to foster-adopt and help a baby out that way.

If you know anything about this, we'd love to hear all about it!

Hi, I have learned that as of the Fall of 2004 the Bill C-16 in Canada will assist those living in abroad, who are Canadian, to adopt internationally. It has yet to be passed by Parliment. My husband and I live in Seattle and are canadian citizens and would like to adopt internationally(China). I contacted a lawyer,in Candada, who specializes in adoption and citizenship, however, she was no help. please contact me via email if you have any info. Thanks Debbie777

Hi,

I think the change you are talking about is C-18 which would give children adopted abroad to Canadian citizens Canadian citizenship without having to have landed immigrant status first (much like the recent US changes). It is not Canada that does not allow adoption while living in the US, it is the INS who will not allow us to emigrate children here. I found out after I moved here too and have since adopted two wonderful children domestically.

Good luck with your search

Cynthia

Thank you Cynthia. It turns out that since we were in the process of domestic adoption in California that my husband was transfered to Ontario Canada for a couple of years. Perfect time to adopt internationally! So within the next few months we will be going to Armenia to pick up a baby boy.
It was so nice of you to provide that info. You had the experience of the same thing! Congratulations on your 2 little ones.

Does anyone know the current situation of Canadians living abroad (eg. in the Middle East) who want to adopt internationally, eg. Cambodia?

adopting from abroad

I learned when I was in the U.S. yet a Canadian Citizen, that as long as we didn't have our Greencards we were alloud to adopt internationally.
