Question about adoption application
A friend of mine wishes to adopt.
She is very worried about the questions asked on the questionnaire about past mental issues. She had past mental issues about seven years ago. But has gotten her life on track with a career and good job etc. Can she just put not applicable in answer to these questions because they do not apply and haven't for awhile. The doctor filled out her form with no/not applicable to past mental issues and certifies her healthy. She loves children and wants to desperately adopt. |

Hi there
I understand being worried about stuff like that. I think we (as adoptive parents - or hopeful ones) think we have to be perfect. But we don't. As long as your friend has it under control, I think you will find there will be no issue. I would answer all questions openly and honestly. Nobody is searching for perfect jalso, you may wish to put this on the general adoptive parents section - this canadian section doesn't get alot of traffic. |

I agree with Leigh. Despite the doctor having put that on the form, if family or friends disclose during the process I think it would shut her out rather quickly. Given references aren't viewed before submitted, it seems quite risky.
We disclosed mental health issues that my family suffers from as well as my husband's father having addiction issues. Workers aren't looking for perfection in any way. If she's functioning well, that's what is important. A quick call to inquire about adoption should put you through to a worker in the adoption department and you can ask without providing your name or info. An easy way to put your mind at rest! I asked all sorts of questions on my two calls with two different workers. They were very, very helpful. |
