SUMMER... Time for Reunions and Family get togethers...
My family tends to have oodles of Summer Reunions. We just got back from the Big One (every two years), about 200+ family at this one. Another smaller one in 3 weeks.
Here is how the past few have gone... 2000: 'When are you getting married?' 2002: 'When are the kids coming?' 2004: 'You sure are taking the practicing seriously!' 2006: 1001 questions about adoption...and alot of advise on how to get pg! lol Love my family...Love the get togethers..But really want to be a Mom and end 4 years of grilling! To top if off, babies seem to come very easily in our family. My cousins have large families (we are french catholic). About 10 or 15 have 5 or more kids. 2 are pg with their 9th baby! So you get alot of slack for not having a family. Anyone else have Family Reunion stories? What do you do in the situation? -M

actually..my family doesnt have reunions and we've never gone to any of dh's (he's not terribly close with extended family)
I do know what you mean tho, we've faced those questions at weddings and such. If I knew people well, they'd already know our situation, and if I didn't know them well, I just told them "not yet" The only time it was really hurtful was when my cousin asked another couple when they were going to have kids "cuz we've all given up on (me and dh's names)" That was really hurtful because he knew we were adopting.....but ya know how it goes, you can pick yer nose, but you can't pick yer family (or their nose) lol |

Our reunions are quite the same. When are you having kids, why don't you have kids, it's your turn next, blah, blah, blah. This is mostly from the older folks, who just don't get it. I always feel left out, as there are kids scattered everywhere, and everyone feels the need to point out we don't have kids yet.
Now that we have decided to adopt, we opted to skip this year's reunion. I couldn't take the teasing anymore, and am not ready to be answering any questions from them. What a concept, just don't attend! I had never allowed myself to do that, but was happy I did this year. Of course we won't hide out forever, but need to be prepared for these people's remarks I guess. The next reunion we go to, hopefully with our little one in tow, will then be filled will more questions and inappropriate remarks (I know my extended family well unfortunately!) No, most of them are great, but of course the old-fashioned ones will have thier say. Oh well, we'll be hanging with the other kids anyways, goodbye to sitting around with the old ones!!! |
