hmmm...

The same reason Americans say, "Huh?"

Just something to make us "distinct"!

Talking

I travel from the States to Canada at least once a year, usually for about a week at a time. I've never heard that many Canadians say, eh. Hmmmm . . . maybe I've been speaking to the wrong Canadians.

Seriously, Canada is a great country and I've given serious consideration to moving there.

I've only ever met one person in my life who says "eh" and I"m from Alberta! I was at a loss for years wondering why people always said that about Canadians. Really don't ever hear it actually except from Americans.

Hilarious thread. I worked in inside sales and had a territory of Eastern Canada for a few years (now I work in Export, and don't get me started on what people say elsewhere....)

I only heard one person use "eh" one time during a visit from some of our dealers. Never on the telephone, though. I just assumed the Western Canadians were the ones always "eh-ing".

On another note - I gave the Canadians such a hard time about the Toronto hockey team one time during a big finals or something they were watching on TV - why on earth are they the Maple Leafs and not the Maple LEAVES????

That to me is odder than why eh?...

HAHAH!! never thought about the whole leafs vs leaves thing.

As for the eh thing, I actually think it's an Eastern thing. There is a HUGE difference in dialect between east and west. West tends to talk like the western states (cali.) and East has a whole different thing going on...for instance, do you say Toronto or Torahna..

If you say Toronto, you're probably west.
