special needs adoption?

Hi to everyone, I am relativly new here, and I wondered, has any one adopted a child with special needs? If so was the process different? How has the child adapted to your home?

What kind of special needs children were presented to you?

What situations do you deal with?

We are currently applying to adopt a special needs older child from the province. We have done ALOT of research on different special needs and really looked at what kinds of disabilities we are willing to accept in a child that comes into our home for adoption.

We are willing to accept a child with fetal alcohol, ADHD, attachment disorders and other issues.

I don't know how the process differs because we have never adopted before.

I do know that with post adoption supports there is help financially from the province for any special care, meds etc the child will need because of their special needs. So that is a good thing!

Welcome Chantallen. We have adopted two children through the Ministry - both with drug exposure. They were 17 mnths (ds) and 8 mnths (dd). They are designated special needs through the system because of needs they might manifest later on. Right now both are on par developmentally (4 1/2 and 22 mnths). My dd does have some medical needs because of her drug exposure. The process was very quick for both of them (18 mnths & 3 mnths) - I guess that might be one of the differences. Especially if you are willing to take a FAS dx. Good luck on your journey. Where are you from?
