ATTENTION ALL OF YOU CANUCKS, eh?
So, do you still shake your head every time an american asks if you live in an Igloo? Are you tired of people assuming you say Aboot? Do you set your tv reminder every Sunday night so you don't miss Trailer Park Boys? Do you know what a centimeter is?
THEN THIS IS THE FORUM FOR YOU!!! I'm Leigh, and I am the new Forum Hostess for the Canadian Adoption Support Forum. We all know that adoptions in Canada are a whole different ball of wax, so lets get together and share our stories!! I'll start!! I'm an adoptive mom to a wonderful almost 2 year old.....ok, so I use the term wondeful loosely....he's wonderfully mischievous!! lol We have an open adoption with his birthfamiliy with letters and visits, but most of that is initiated by us. We are also just starting the process to adopt another. We chose domestic infant adoption here in Alberta and went through an Agency in Calgary (A.O.) Ok, thats it for me!! I look forward to meeting you all!! Leigh |

I'm Tammy and the adoptive mom of my precious miracle Bug. She just turned two and is the light of our lives (and of course, at two, the drainer of all our energy, lol!) She came to us as a newborn through a domestic adoption here in Alberta. We enjoy an open adoption with her first family.
Right now, we are waiting for another child/ren to join our family. We've been waiting 9+months with the same agency we used for Bug (AO, just like Leigh...). We are also approved for both the adoption and foster-to-adopt programs with ALberta Children's Services (ACS). Now all I can say, is "come baby... we're ready for ya" Now I have to come clean, just based on Leigh's intro... I'm "technically" a pseudo-Canuck. I am an American (gasp now, if you like...) who has never dreamed of imagining all Canadians live in igloos. And no, I don't know the metric system very well (but I can figure out how far we have to drive by taking what is on the sign times 0.6! LOL! And sorry, I've never heard of the Trailer Park Boys. And when I say about, it comes out more like 3 syllables rather than two, lol, at least according to people here! Before anyone thinks I might be offended, I'm not...at all. I hope no one cares that I'm here. I am so blessed to be married to a wonderful man and Momma to my precious girl (who will someday be quite "North American" when she gets her dual citizenship), both who happen to be Canadian. So that's me... can't wait to get to know more of you who have adopted in Canada... Last edited by blessedbybug : 03-15-2006 at 02:29 PM. |

This feels like an AA meeting...
Hi my name is Tara and I'm the birthmom to Thomas Isaac who's 6 years old. Thomas was placed in a very open adoption at birth by his birthfather and I, whom I'm married to now, Chad. We visit with him and his family every few months or so. I am also an Albertan and also placed through A.O. I am very active with them as a mentor, speaker, writer and am on the planning committee for Calgary's birthmother's day. I'm also a registered nurse. Oh yeah and I am "partly" American...lol long story.
Go Leigh!! ![]()

Nother Canadian here ay? We live in Ontario ay. We adopted through the foster care system here. Our lil guy is also 2. 2004 must have been a good year for Canadian adoptions ay?
We have a who knows kind of adoption. Not open not closed but no contact. Bmom is on the run to avoid a CCAS apprehension with new baby due early summer. Best part is (sarcasm) is that my 25 yr old son is the bdad and is running with her. Long dramatic story. Anyway glad to see you all here. I have 100 questions about Canadian law and adoption and relative placement. Just not right now. I also have a very active beautiful little boy who needs his bath and a story...and probably a temper tantrum or 2 or 3 at bedtime. lol. |

Ahh... another "cross-cultural" marriage, ha! And your boys are from Missouri?? I moved here from Kansas City (grew up in Kansas) where DH and I met ... it truly is a small world!! I'd be interested to hear your "dual" citizenship story. So far, we've found the process of getting US citizenship so complicated for Bug that we thought we'd wait and do all our kiddos together, if there are more. Since she's adopted it gets a little bit trickier. Great to make this connection... |

Well my dad is a "legal alien" in the states and has lived there for the past 17 years. So I have lots of family members there and have spent alot of time in the states. Not as exciting as you thought eh?

When my dh applied for CANADIAN citizenship, it was a long process that took a couple of years. With our other boys, it took FIVE business days for them to get their Canadian citizenship. A breeze ... We have no interest in getting our Canadian born kids American citzenship because we dont intend to ever live down there and dh is worried about drafting issues. Our boys were from St. Louis we really enjoyed our trips to Missouri - it was an education!

Another Canadian here....
Hi ladies. I think most of you know me already, but here we go.
My name is Anne, and I have been married to my DH for 16 years. YIKES. We got married when I was just a youngin, so I am not that old really. lol We have two beautiful boys through adoption. Our older son is 8, and our baby is 17 months. We brought our baby home in June, and we finalize his adoption next month. We plan to adopt maybe 1 or 2 more children. I still have a few hairs that haven't gone white yet. lol I am supposed to return to work the week after next, but have decided that I will stay home. ![]()

I meant to ask one of you.....
My DH went to University in Michigan and has obtained a SS card as he worked there too. Is it worth anything? I mean, does it make him have dual citizenship or anything? ![]()

Oh! I'm here too!!
My name is Michelle and my hubby is Jonathan. Our son is also 2!! (2004 must have been a crazy year!!) We have an open adoption with his birthparents, but they live in Utah, and we are in Ontario, so we don't really visit that often! They just had another baby in Jan, so my son has a full bio-sis and 3 half-bio-sibs. We are hoping to adopt again. We probably will be adopting from Ontario this time, but you just never know what's in the stars! We also worry about dual-citizenship issues with our son, and have no interest in maintaining the US citizenship primarily out of fear of draft issues as well. Umm..that's it.. Michelle |
