Newfoundland Adoption

I have been talking to a person who might be my sister and I think that they should get this stuff out like right away. The chances of talking to someone that may be your long lost relative without that information could be heartwrenching for all. I have personally called and stated this information but they will not help us. I have this person's adopted name and I gave her the original name in the event one of us could get info. They told me as a birth sibling that I could obtain the information since the parent was deceased, took the money and now they are saying they should not have done that. Today it is this law and tomorrow it's another. I wish I knew a person high up in the government in Canada that could rectify this. Someone in those offices does not want to release this information who I don't know. Most of them are very wonderful people and want to help all of us, but there was one who's name I did not get that was of no heart. What do you do when you want to find siblings and they keep stopping you? My goodness they are grown adults with grown children. And if a veto is entered in my eyes it would need to be by the date the law calls for or it should be invalid. That might be an issue for those of you that live there.

release of info

hi everyone

this is totally nonsense.i was told because i am a birth sibling i couldnt get info only birthparents.they are right there to take the money with no results.they answer my emails with this excuse and that.yesterday it was we released 75 my mom called 2 days ago and was told we are still working on it no mention of the 75.all we want is information about our loved ones and we pay for it have the right now to know and still are bamboozled.its still a big secret that shouldnt be revealed.i dont think they know what they are doing all that info should been sent asap to people who requested it.these people who were adopted are all adults now like you say and maybe they would welcome someone looking for them and explaining the circumstances of their adoption.people have a right to know but seems like the people who hold the power have no idea what its like to wait for such important information.if i lived in st.johns i think they would be sick of seeing me by now demanding what is mine.

nfld govt

hi everyone

i decided to email vutal stats to see if i could get them to at least check on my moms application.i got a rather lenghthy snotty reply from someone named brenda there.she said she cannot give me any info just general information and everytime someone calls on this they cant take the time to check because it takes their time away from the URGENT REQUESTS they have.she said if your mom applied after oct 2003 to the end of 2003 she will hear in sept if it was later it will be later in the fall.in other words dont bother them they wont check on anything because im only a sibling and they are too busy to deal with you anyway.this infuriates me to no end those snotty people they dont care your just a number to them and you will get it when they are ready they are soooo busy.

release of info

hi everyone

i came across another person waiting for info.i directed him to this discussion.seems he has same info their are alot of inquiries and he might hear something in sept.happy to see what you have done derek.we all have to stick together on this issue.this is too important and personal an issue for people holding our information to be treating it like youll get it when we get around to it.this should of been given priority when it began its a matter of human dignity.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the board. I filed with Vital Statistics last October in order to find info on my birth parent(s?). For their reference, I sent a copy of my birth certificate (which had been issued many months following my birth, and listed my adopted parents' names and my actual place of birth).

Today I received my reply from Vital Statistics. It contained my birth record, my mother's name at the time, and other details, such as the name I was christened with. No mention of the father.

I'm sure those of you who've been waiting for your replies will be getting something soon. I grew up in Newfoundland - spent my first two dozen years there. It's in my blood.

In any case, good luck to each of you. As for my next step? I have a name, and not much of anything else to go on. I'm really not sure what to do with it. Are there private investigation agencies on the Rock? Any suggestions as to what others have done?

BTW, you cannot imagine how stunning it is to look at your birth mother's name after wondering about her for much of the past 39 years. Oh, and is anyone looking for a son or brother?

I received mine last week.

Hi!

I'm fairly new to this, but just read this thread, and wanted to let you all know that I received my info last week (I mailed my form before Oct 2003). It was strange looking at the name. It's still going to be a battle finding out anything else, as I'm sure my bmom is married by now. I've been doing some research online- browsing vital stats records from NB. I know NL doesn't have theirs on line, but it's a place to start (check for births, deaths, and marriages using the surname). It's just an idea I have, but I'm going to check vital stats records to see if my bmom registered for a marriage license (next year when I travel back to NL). I have 2 provinces I have to work with (My bmom is from NB and I was born in Labrador). I thought it would make me feel different, but I just have more questions. Oh well. Good luck to everyone!

Smile I got my identifing birth record from Vital Statistics

I got my offical birth record from Vital Statistics two weeks ago! I was shaking when I opened it up. I was scared it was going to inform me that my bmom had filed a veto. But it wasn't that at all. It was my adoption order and birth recored. It contained my FULL name at birth and the full name of the bmom and the town she is from. This info combined with the non-identifing info I have been able to do some good searching and digging. I think I have found my Aunt (a sister-in-law to my mother). I have emailed her and I'll wait a month before tring to call her. After 6 long years of searching, I can wait another month.

I strongly encourage you to contact vital statistics for your info.

mom got info

hi everyone

i just talked to my mom and she recd letter from vital stats my brother filed a no contact veto.it is very upsetting and disappointing as all of you know the time and emotion i have put into finding my brother.my mom is very upset as this speaks volumes that he dont want to know the true story.at least we know he is alive and has very strong feelings about this to file a veto.we would of loved nothing more to find him.there is nothing i can do as a sibling its the end of the road for me.i have to accept what he wants and move on .i guess he answered a big question for me he dont want anything to do with even his sister and none of this was my fault.oh well i tried thats all anyone can do.i want to wish all who have found their info all the luck in the world and always keep an open mind because nothing is as cut and dry as it seems.i think by the choice you have made to search shows that about you as human beings.all the best.

Sorry to hear that. I don't think you should close the door on your brother, though. He doesn't know his own story, and feelings can change with time and discovery. I hope you find him. You will if you keep trying.

To delan and others looking for a birth family behind the strange names on those newly acquired birth certificates: Define a geographical area to search, compile a list of people with your birth surname in those towns from Canada 411. Try to make contact with school, hospital and/or church officials to make inquiries. Googling may help you with contact info for these. You may find your birth parent's name on a genealogy page. Keep looking, and good luck!

Post Adoption Services Searching!

Hi everyone,
This is my first post and hopefully this will provide you with some assistance in your search. I received my original birth record and adoption order around three weeks ago. I, like many of you thought to myself, what now? I contacted post adoption services in St. John's and asked what my options were. The person I spoke with on the phone instructed me to send a copy of my original birth certificate and adoption record to Post Adoption Services. The usual expected wait time for them to initiate a search on your behalf is at least 5 years! However, she indicated that they could not initiate any searches until they had received the information that I had just received, my birth record and adoption record! She said that there were not many received to date and that if I get mine in right away, the search would probably start in the not too distant future, within two months! I sent this information to them two weeks ago and today I received a call from someone from Post Adoption Services indicating that she is going to initiate the search for my birth parents and it could be days, weeks or months before she finds my birth mother! I am shocked! I initally sent in my request for assistance in my search in 2002 and expected to have to wait 5 years! I strongly reccommend that anyone who has received your original birth record and adoption order to contact Post Adoption Services immediately and send copies to them. The only way I found out about this is by inquiring myself, I didn't receive a letter from them stating that in order to initiate this search they needed copies of the documents that they had just sent to me!!! Unbelievable! Well, I am pleased that the search has begun on their end and look forward to the results whatever they may be. Good luck everyone!

adoption records in Newfoundland

I received the much awaited letter from Vital Statistics to be told that I cannot obtain the information as a sibling and my Mother is deceased. I guess this is the end of the road for me, and since my sister and brother have not registered I may never find them and know them. My hopes have been dashed. Who knows maybe someday they will come looking for me. Any other suggestions from anyone? I know they were both adopted together in August 1956 by an American Air Force family in St Johns Newfoundland. This means they are probably in the United States of America. They would have crossed the border as Canadien Citizens at some point. I know my sister's fathers name but not my brother's. 13 years and still no farther along.
