Foster Adopt and Moving
Hi All,
DH and I are going to start our PRIDE classes (in CA) next month. Meanwhile we are considering moving. DEFINITELY we will move to a better school district before taking children into our home, but possibly we will move from CA to NV. Does anyone know what happens to our "qualifications" if we take PRIDE classes in CA, or do any part of the homestudy here, and then move to another state? Will we need to start over elsewhere? Also -- if anyone has any opinions on the county system or other local agencies for the Las Vegas, Nevada area, can you please send me a private message? (It's my understanding we are not supposed to publicly comment on agencies.) If we do move, we're considering Henderson, NV (in the general "Las Vegas" area.) Lastly -- if we complete the process here in CA and have the Foster Children and and are working to adopt them, would we even be allowed to move? I assume we can once we adopt them, and I assume we could NOT if parental rights have not been terminated, but what about an inbetween stage -- parental rights terminated, not legally adopted yet. Any advice/info would be appreciated. Thanks so much. |

we moved out of ca....none of our classes, training, or paperwork carried over to our new state. we started over from scratch. oh...wait....i threw a tantrum and got them to accept my physical from ca. lol. and they took it....eventually....everything else...even references from friends....we did over.
we moved out of ca with a foster child headed for adoption. we were advised to wait until tpr. but we were allowed to move before the appeal period was over. my case was weird...but i hear that typically you will have to wait until tpr to move. for us, it was more a matter of parents wouldn't have to be notified of where he was going, if their rights had been terminated. it was a saftey issue...so we waited until then anyways. if, obviously, the appeal had been won, "our" chlid would have been removed from our home, and returned to ca to be returned to his parents....just as if we were still residing in ca. for us...it was a matter of necessity....the move was GOING to happen, and the baby needed to come with us. but let me be really clear....lol...it was NOT fun and it was FAR from easy. icpc (what allows a child to move across state lines) is not fun. and even though our child is now adopted....we are still dealing with the icpc mess. social workers are still involved in our lives until the case officially closes. if there were to be ANY way you could wait to move until any child in your home was adopted... i would reccommend that route. but know that if push comes to shove, you will most likely be allowed to move after tpr. i'm still glad we did it...had we waited in ca with the baby until he was adopted before joining the rest of our family in our new state...we would have waited a LONG time since the appeal process got drawn out over 6 months in our case....causing quite a delay. to sum up: it is possible.....but avoid it if you can. ![]() |

Thanks for the advice. I'm curious, how did the kids do with the move? I really hate the idea of putting kids who've already been through a lot through a move.
But selfishly, I don't want to wait any longer to get started on this foster to adopt journey (We're already in our early 40's) They SAY the longest it takes for TPR and Adoption in San Diego is 18 months, but who knows what the reality will be. We could probably wait it out in CA that long -- the move is only because we're pretty much EMOTIONALLY DONE w/ the high cost of living and taxes in CA, not because we "have" to move due to job/family. Maybe I'll call the county we're hoping to move to and see if they can tell me from their perspective what, if anything, the'd accept from CA in terms of classes/home study. |
