Post adoption medical coverage: Private insurance AND medi-cal??

I think I asked this before but I'm brain dead right now. I am close to discussing the post adoption agreement with our SW. We will be placing our baby on our private medical insurance post adoption. But I really want Medi-cal as a backup. Is that possible? If so, how does that work? Say for prescriptions, can I have my private insurance pay for it and then have medical cover the $20 copay or does it not work that way?

Also, is there anything I should be aware of in the "negotiations"? We were really just hoping for the minimum stipend and medi-cal. She's fairly healthy but was drug exposed.

Thanks!

yes...you can....as long as your provider accepts both types of insurance. we had kaiser...which also accepted medi-cal, and so medi-cal paid our appt co pay and most medicine copays. it wasn't a big deal. you can pm me if you have any questions about it.

Great question!! This is exactly what my husband and I have decided to do. I have aetna insurance and we're hoping to put our adopted child on both our private insurance and Medi-cal!

FYI--Medi-cal does not always cover the copays...they often do not cover my children's prescription copays. I could go back to the dr and see if he could change the prescription to one that it would cover...but it may not be as good as the one he prescribed. My dr or psy. do not accept medi-cal either....but I don't want to switch.

Double insurancw

FD had Medical through DCFS.I became her legal guardian so she was also covered by private insurance.

Private insurance was primary - but Medi-Cal covered the copays for office visits and prescriptions. My private insurance paid for more presciptions than Medi-Cal so usually I had most prescriptions covered by Medical as there was no co-pay but if Medi-Cal did not cover a prescription, then I used my insurance.

Also - Medi-Cal only allows one dental visit a year. My insurance allowed three. Since FD had braces, she was supposed to have cleanings every three months. So my insurance paid for three cleanings, and Medi-Cal paid for one. When she had to have a lot of dental work done, we used both insurance for her teeth.
