New Birth Certificate & SSN

Once your adoption was finalized, how long did it take to get to get a new birth certificate on average? Also, what do you need in order to get a ssn? My son hasn't had one at all.

Thanks,

Yash

We just finalized this week in CA and they told us it would take 8-9 months for the BC and then we can get a SS number. For taxes we filed a W7A form to get a temporary.

What do you need to fill out a W7A? Thank you so much for the info.

We are in CA and it also took about 8 months to get the birth certificate. We've applied for a NEW SSN, so the bfamily can not find her/us from the original one. That was about three months ago, and they tell me the response (yes or no) should be coming any day. There are provisions that allow for a new number when there was domestic violence involved. On another thread, someone said that you could just automatically get a new one when you adopt, so I am not sure quite how it works.

Oh interesting, I was told you had to request a new SSN when you're in court finalizing. I'll have to ask my lawyer to be on the safe side.

Thanks.

When I spoke to the SS office about getting a new SS for our adopted children they told me I needed to bring in the adoption decree along w/ their new birth certificates. I also am in Cali.
It took longer because I wanted new numbers issued.

I found the form out on the IRS website. All I needed was a copy of the adoption decree or documentation from the agency placing the child and that it establishes placement of the child in your home for the purpose of adoption. Ok I just read it fully. A copy of the placement agreement, placement order, temporary placement paperwork, or other documentation that identifies the adlptive child, the agency placing the child, & establishes that placement of this child in your home for purposes of adoption. It was very simple to fill out.
