There was a rumor going around that six months is now the youngest age, is that true???

I contacted an agency in Bulgaria and she said that the youngest we could get right now is 2.5 - 3 y.o. I don't know about that though.

I just heard from another agency to expect to be referred a 13-14 month old. Not sure why I heard 6 months is going to be the new norm from another agency? Did anyone else know anything abuot this?

The country is thinking about changing the age to 6 months but no law in effect now. The age is still 12 months. Also BG parent age requirement is not more than 45 years older than the child.

Are you sure about the 45 years older than the child rule? Or is this just an agency thing? We are in the middle of our adoptoin and my husband is 49. We are on the registry for a 1.5-2.5 year old.

From what i have read the current age for a child to be considered "abandoned" is 1 year old then the child has to be refused for domesetic adoption 3 times. Only then is the childput in the system for international adoption. What the MOJ wants to do now is possibly change the "abandoned" age to 6 months old so that children can be placed into a home earlier, but there is noknown date for this to occur.

As for the age limit i think that does vary from agency to agency and province to province and country to country.

Re: age requirement is NOT agency mandated -- it is the country's requirement: See THIS forum's factsheet on Bulgaria:

"ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOPTIVE PARENTS: Prospective adoptive parents may be married or single. Adoptive parents must be at least fifteen years older than their adoptive children, but no more than forty-five years older. There are no Bulgarian age minimums or maximums; prospective adoptive parents are expected to comply with their home government’s age requirements (For the U.S. prospective adoptive parents must be at least 25 years old; there are no age maximums). "


UPDATE: The length of time that children now legally have to be held on the national data base has been reduced to six months - instead of the 12 month requirement.

There is so much inaccurate info on BG adoptions on the internet. You have to rely on information from agencies that have been actively placing children from Bulgaria for many years. They are the ones that know the accurate information.

I just got confirmation from my agency that the requirement did change, and the new policy is 6 months of age. Now, it may be a while before a 6 month old acutally makes the registry. Given there are so many kids that need to be loaded, my gut says that the babies will be last. I could be wrong, but I would not get your hopes up of getting a quick match for a 6 month old.

wow thanks for the info. This is so exciting that changes are actually occuring in the best interest of the children. But again we have to be realistic right? Do you know when they made the change?

I agree with you. I would LOVE a 1.5 -2 year old, but my main concern is providing a loving home for a child. We started the process right after reading one of your posts. My dh and i still remember your gorgeous girls pics and your story and it was one of the reasons we chose Bulgaria.
