Breastfeeding and Dompheridone

HI, so i am wondering since you cant get domperidone in the US, is it safe to take while nursing?? I kinda thought anything that you take is transfered through your milk, and isnt that bad for the baby?? I was going to try and nurse, but we have been waiting for 6 months and no action about any possible matches so far. So i am kinda changing my mind about trying to nurse but i already sold my breastpump on Craigslist and i really dont want to buy a new one. How many times a day would i have to pump?? where i work, i really cant pump during the day. So like from 8:30 am till 5 pm i wouldnt beable to pump. So i would beable to pump like in the morning once and at night like twice. Would that even be enough stimulation to get any supply?? I have birth control left over from my IVF cycle i could use and i know a website where you can get almost anything if you want. Could i just take b.c. and then start pumping?? i asked my Gynecologist about it last time i was there and she kinda didnt want to help me what so ever, she siad, why would you want to do that?? you wont even get a supply. and that was the end of that! I dont want to take drugs and herbs without the advice of a doctor. i dont want to possibly hurt my newborn baby if i am putting something bad in its system. i breastfed my son for the first 2 months, but i didnt nurse him for like a day and half when i was gone and i dried right up! Nothing left. i didnt have an overabundance of milk to begin with so i dont know if that is a sign that i wouldnt do good with nurse another baby. If anyone has any advice i would appreciate it. Thanks, Rach

Well, first, Yes Domperidone is safe. Yes, it is transwerred through your milk in small quantities, but smaller than a safe dose to give directly to a newborn baby. Whether or not you feel comfortable taking it is up to you. doctors are not the be all end all of knowledge, yet I understand someone not being comfortable not having their guidance. Milk production can be very different one baby to the next, so that doesn't mean you can or can't breastfeed...and breastfeeding is more than milk anyway. Only certain BC pills are recommended...and I don't know if you have the right types. I didn't use BC pills though. You can pump a lot or just sort of prime the pump so to speak and pump when you can. You will be less likely to get a full supply that way...but you can try. Why can you not pump at work? Just curious.

Thanks for the reply. i could pump at work, it would just be very uncomfortable i think. i work on my parents farm and we do have a pretty long lunch break, so i could pump once during work. Its just that i know my mom thinks it's completely weird and unnecessary to try and breastfeed an adoptive child. I have heard her say some not so nice comments about how she thinks people are so crazy to do it and stuff. i guess i just dont feel comfortable doing it there. If i have too i could.

So, if my doctor isnt really willing to help me, then how do i go about finding the right meds and b.c. to use?? I just dont want to take the wrong stuff and do months of it and then it doesnt work. Thanks, Rach

The best site for protocols on adoptive breastfeeding are Ask Lenore ~ Home Page and kellymom :: Breastfeeding and Parenting . The asklenore one has the protocols and the kelly mom one has other info. The best birth control I think is Yasmin and you take Domperidone with that....you don't take any of the placebos but just the active pills (so you don't take the last week....you just move straight to the next pack without skipping days. Once you quit the BC pills, then you start pumping and taking Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle with it if you want. Doing the pill things would make it to where you didn't have to pump at work for now. You could stay on that until you are amtched and then pump, you stay on it until you get baby and use an SNS or a Lactaid to nurse directly at the breast with formula until your milk comes in. Lots of options. Only you know if this is something that is important enough to you to do no matter what people think. My mom was negative too, even though she breastfed us all. It turned out she was negative, because she was afraid it wouldn't work and I would be devastated, instead of elated with my new baby. If you decide you really want to do this, it might be worth it to sit down with your mom and talk...if she is being negative just because she doesn't like it, you can make it clear that you won't listen to comments such as those....so she needs to keep them away from you. Hugs as you make your decision. If you have more questions..just ask!
