Newbie
Hi Ladies,
I've been reading this forum for a few days and have been so encouraged by all you have to share. We have been waiting to adopt for 8 months and I would like to BF our baby. I have the Lact-Aid, Newman's book, and some fenugeek. Is it unrealistic to think that I can just use the LAct-Aid and eventually my body will kick in and produce some breastmilk? I know volume isn't everything and am mostly doing this for the bonding. My DH is very supportive. I am hesitant to take any drugs and don't want to pump round the clock for a baby who may not be here for another year. Any advice/opinions would be welcome. |

It's possible! I just used the supplementors and I had my milk up enough to stop using them after just a few weeks. I do pull them out about every 6 weeks or so when my milk seems less. BUT there is a less that 15% chance that it will work for everyone.
I didn't have to use herbs or medications - but many moms do and have great experiences. Best of luck to you! It's well worth it and I'm still breastfeeding my now 20 month old! ~Shannon

I was a dom. user and was very satisfied with the results. I had milk in 2 days and was pumping 3 times a day for 10 min. each time. And if you are still waiting but producing milk you can freeze it too. I was already freezing when my baby came and that was 2 weeks after signing.

Wow...that is all very encouraging. I really wanted to do this too when we adopted our son, but he was born with ea/tef which meant his esophogus was not properly attached and had to have surgery. Because of this he could only be fed by g-tube and at that point we were making 2 trips a week to Pittsburgh (3.5 hours away) while trying to get our house ready. Because of this I did not push to try to do this. But reading what you folks have to say encourages me to want to do it the next time around if possible. Logan turns one in May and we are thinking of starting the process again. When should I try to see if I can "get things going?" Should we wait until we are matched or no? Thanks for your help everyone. (((HUGS))) Have a great day everyone!!
Nikki

I'm a newbie too...can I chime in here? First off, I had a m/c a few months ago and am on some meds that stimulate milk production although I wasn't doing this intentionally. I pumped last night for the first time since stopping b/f'ing my 9 y.o. son when he was almost 2...I got half an ounce out of my right breast alone! And it is pure milk...not watery at all.
We have yet to be matched...actually we are just getting ready to send fees to an agency but I talked to a La Leche league person and she said to go ahead and pump, like 2-3 times a day and then I can go on the Dom med before we get a baby. I only work 3 days a month so I'm planning on pumping at least twice a night when I have the most milk and then if we get matched, take it from there. Nice to meet all of you by the way! Blessings, Michelle

We have been matched with a baby girl who is due at the end of March so I need to get started pumping now. I am going to try with only herbs first and see how it goes. Do you think I should contact a lactation consultant or just go with the protocols I have from books and websites?

Yesterday I started to use a pump to see if that alone would stimluate my breasts to eventually produce milk. I was not expecting anything to happen because I've never been pregnant and I haven't taken any hormones to induce lactation.
Too my surprise I actually got some droplets on my fisrt try!! So now I'm very encouraged about this and so is my Le Leche leader. She suggested that I look into getting domperidone to help increase the amount of milk. But, how do I get this medication? I know it can be compounded in the US or that I can order from Canada, but don't I need a prescription? Do I just call my Dr and say, write my prescription? What did everyone else do?

Hi- We are just preparing for our homestudy. Will be entering Newborn program soon afterwards. I nursed my own two girls, and have been researching the domperidone. You said milk after two days! Wow that sounds great! Did you use any other meds, like BC prior? I would prefer not to if I don't need to. I wonder
how much difference it makes in the supply? Any input on use of the herbs from anyone? I never did have any luck pumping before-I wonder what kind of supply I would get to just wait until baby comes and start the dom? Any input welcome. Please give?! thanks |
