questions

Has anyone successfully breastfed a baby without taking the protocal of birth control pills and domperidone?

For health reasons I cannot take birth control pills. I am hesitant to take anything that may give me a hormonal imbalance as it can agrivate a heart condition that I have. For that reason I do worry that domperidone may do the same thing to my body that birth control pills have done in the past. I haven't spoken with my cardiologist but I highly doubt he would approve this medication for me.

Can I successfully induce lacation using herbal supplements, pumping alone? I have decided that this is very important for me and for our future adopted baby and am disapointed that I will be unable to use the "protocal."

I had ample milk supply with my two dd's and had no problem breastfeeding. I don't know if this matters or not? I'm sure if I can get the milk started I will be okay.

If there are any success stories of inducing lactation w/o birth control/domperidone please post or PM me. Thank you.

The domperidone isn't anything hormonal, its given for digestion problems... my cardiologist ok'd it, I have had heart issues as well.

I bf my first children with no troubles, they were biological. I didn't take the bcp for my adoption, just the domperidone and the herbs, and I am pumping 20oz a day. It has been about a month. I am hoping to have a good supply, around 30 oz before the baby gets here. Although, where I am now, is more than plenty for a newborn, and the baby could help me increase that.

I am still successfully breastfeeding (my now 15 month old) and I didn't use anything but a supplementor. It took about a month before my milk came in to the point where I could take out the supplementor for some feedings - and a couple weeks after that we didn't need it except for growth spurts about every 6 weeks or so until my milk caught up again.
Not to norm, but totally do-able. I've never been pregnant, never breastfed so you have a jump start!
I have an adoptive breastfeeding email support group if your interested email me and I can give you the info for that.

Shannon,

I would be interested in the e-mail support group if possible.

Thanks,
Kim

I would not necessarily tell you to take dom with your heart condition, but, I have a heart condition too, a cardiomyopathy casued by my first pregnancy. I take 20 mg of dom four times per day. My LC said that the only time dom caused heart problems was when the pt decided to take much more than was prescribed. I have had no problems.

But, it is possible to breastfeed without dom, you just won't make as much milk, not nearly as much, from what I understand. Milk doesn't have to be your main goal. You can use the experience to bond with your child, to give a gift only a mother can, and you can use a Lact Aid, SNS, or even a bulb syringe to supplement the rest.

Even if you decide not to risk the dom, and to only use pumping/ herbs, don't give up on breastfeeding.
