Lactation induction with pump only?
The child I will be adopting is due August 30, 2004. I have rented a Medela Lactina breast pump and want to attempt to induce lactation. I don't want to take domperidone. I know I can get herbs to take and will be doing that. My question is how do I know how often to pump, how long to pump, what setting to use on the pump, etc? Also, anybody had luck producing milk without domperidone?

YOu really don't even have to pump if you don't want to. You can simply put the baby to your breast and use a supplimenter like the Lact-aid. The baby get formula or banked milk while stimulating your breasts to make milk. YOu are unlike to build a full supply this way but you will most like build at least 50% within a few months. Once the baby is on solids you may even beable to ditch the Lact-aid.
If your eally want to pump you can but pumps are not as effective as a well latched baby to build milk supply. Your other issue is that you don't have a whole lot of time. Pumping alone takes months to build a good supply, assuming you will let down for a pump. Many women who birthed babies and have great supplies don't letdown for pumps. Pumping does get a bit of a jump start and if you have inverted nipplespump away. It is a good way to release the adhesions that cause inverted nipples. good luck. induced lactation is not easy in the first few weeks but once you get the hang of it it is great. lisa |

Hi
I totally agree with Lisa..most women do not produce more than drops with the pumping/herbs route ahead of time..the baby nursing with the Lact-aid will help your supply the most..some go on to make 1/3 to 1/2 of the milk supply just with the Lact-aid.. if you add domperidone..it can be 1/2 to 3/4 supply ..and the NG protocol is 3/4 to full supply...though everyone is different! Remember..there is more to nursing than milk! The bonding and closeness is so important ..you can pump..but like Lisa said..you dont have to...just put the baby to the breast with the Lact-aid and you will be fine!

Breasst changes are a very good sign. I have heard of successful induction with just pumping but in both cases they had several months of pumping. I think you may have a couple of advantages over those ladies in that not only have you done this before but you clearlya re off to a great start with those breast changes. I would think that by going to a better pump you will begin to see milk in no time.

Newman Goldfarb Protocol. It involves birth control pills pumping and domperindone for several months but it very effective at building supply ahead of time.

Most women who do have success with just pumping follow the 10-15 minutes every 3 hour rule and you do need to pump during the night to help tell your body that it needs to produce milk. It's a commitment - but any stimulation is great - just remember to use some sort of lubrication when pumping or else you may get really sore..
Best of luck to you - adoptive breastfeeding is the best thing I've ever worked so hard for!!

I was able to build a full supply with pumping, herbs, and Domperidone. I was not able to until I added the Domperidone though. I think I actually have less side effects from the Dom than the herbs. I did not have to take BCP though. I am not working on building enough to nurse my son and the new baby.

I tried the route you are taking. It did not work for me. My daughter wouldn't nurse until I was making milk, even if I used the Lactaid. Herbs did nothing. Pumping with herbs did almost nothing. Pumping with domperidone worked great and I got enough milk to get my daughter to nurse. I quit pumping and just nursed plus domperidone and I got a full supply and kept it after I quit the domperidone. Off domperidone for over a year now and no problems with supply. I had no side effects with the domperidone except possibly weight gain, but then all I did was sit on my butt and stare at my gorgeous baby.
Good luck. |

You need a better pump. You need a hospital grade pump where you can double pump. You can rent them, you don't have to buy them.

you could also buy one of the better quality double electric personal pumps....a Medela Pump in Style or an Ameda Purely Yours are what I used and they both have done well.
