Too soon to start?
I am going to be adopting my sister's baby, due in early February. She is VERY sure that adoption is the right decision - no backing out.
I am sure I want to breastfeed, but I don't really want to take any drugs or herbs. So, is 4 months too early to start? I figure that without herbs it may take longer to build a supply. Any opinions? |

Check out the Adoptive Breastfeeding Resource Website, ABRW. They have so much information, and women with a multitude of experience. I don't know the website address, but if you run a search it should come up. Good luck to you, Shelley

Four months is not too soon. If you do get a milk supply going before baby arrives, you can freeze it to use as backup. You are right in thinking that it might take a little longer w/o meds. Just make sure you have a really good dual breast pump. Medela makes a really good one. You can get a new one on ebay for about $250. Do not use a used pump. Breast milk can carry certain infectous bacteria that can contaminate a pump. You do not want to be getting or giving your baby someone elses cooties. I breasfeed my 4 month old adaughter and I have done alot of reading on this topic. The meds that are generaly used to induce lactation are not thought to pass into the milk.
