BoTM Reading Room Suggestions

Welcome to the Book of The Month Read Room Suggestions thread.

Please take a minute to suggest a book selection for our monthly book club. In order to be selected, a book must meet the following criteria:
  • The book must be focused on adoption.
  • The book must be rated PG at most – books containing descriptive sexual content and situations will not be considered

If the book you suggest is selected, you have the option of leading The Book Club discussions for that month. If you are interested in doing this, please note it in your post below!

Please provide the full name of the selection, the author is also preferred and an added bonus would be the ISBN Number. Please don’t post URL’s to retail websites where the book can be located!

If you have questions, please post!

I just read The Girls Who Went Away by Anne Fessler. The book and interviews really helped me to understand some of the emotions my bmom felt and is still feeling.

Book: "Letters and Reflections to My Adopted Daughters"
ISBN: 141410264X
Penned by English hymn writer, John Newton in the 1700's

Hi, I read a very old fragile book by an adoptive father years ago from the 1700's that I bought on Ebay- first published in the 1800's. The book had not been republished and as an adoptee I was so touched by the words this loving father shared with and about his 2 adopted daughters- his 2 orphaned nieces from his wife's side of the family- the girls were cousins. He seems to know beautiful things to say to an adoptee, and as I read them, felt He was saying them to me.
John Newton, author of the world famous hymn, "Amazing Grace" penned 21 letters in London to his adopted daughter Elizabeth. This was the man who was a wretched slave trader and vile man who almost died at sea- and God takes ahold of his heart- thus the song, Amazing Grace. This book was combined with more of Newtons vintage writings- reflections Newton had on the beautiful life of his other adopted daughter Eliza who died young at 14 years of age. These 2 old books are combined into one slim volume. Though sad to witness this fragile time, Newton openly shares his true feelings, his wrestlings with God and his peace as He is transformed observing the strong faith in God in his daughter and her readiness to meet God face to face.
This book may not be for everyone, for Newton shares his faith in God passionately and openly in these vintage letters of wisdom and timeless truths. How rare to have a father write so lovingly and consistently to his daughters- My dad never wrote me letters- so I treasure these jewels written by Newton.

Edited to remove Retail website has excerpts of the book and a couple of the letters He wrote posted.

Can it be foster.. or just strictly adoption.

If so.. my suggestion is:

They Cage the Animals at Night by Jennings Michael Burch

If not.. strike suggestion.

Other Adoption Books

I'm currently reading two books about adoption that aren't exactly current (1991 and 1992) but are good reads. One is Being Adopted The Lifelong Search for Self by David Brodzinsky, Marshall Schechter and Robin Marantz.

The second is Birth Bond - Reunions between Birthparents & Adoptees -What happens after . . . by Judith Gediman & Linda Brown. I'm really enjoying this one. It describes in detail the different emotional stages of reunion and post-reunion and gives firsthand accounts.

I'm looking to start my own adoption book collection and would love to read about other great books. I'd especially like to know of any good search manuals as I'm at the beginning of my search journey.

Thanks BookMom! The books you suggested are very good ones- I read them over 10 years ago and I would say they are some of the "classics" especially for adoptees and birth parents embarking on adoption search and reunions.
Blessings to you on your search journey!

Jody

My suggestion for a future book is "Gone to an Aunt's" by Anne Petrie. It is a narrative history of the homes for unwed mothers in Canada. It is a very powerful book which also touches on adoption of course.
